eyeInspire: Submit & Resist

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. - James 4:7

As believers, there will always be things in our lives that hold us back from fully submitting ourselves to God. God understands this, and we must understand that our God is a forgiving God. Although we are forgiven for our sins, that doesn't give us permission to fall into submission when we are tempted by the devil. We submit to God and resist the devil. The enemy is after us in so many different aspects of our lives, but it's our decision whether or not we will allow him to rejoice in our falters.

Many times we let idols, money, sex, lust, greed, envy, pride and so many other things of the world get in the way of our relationship with God. These are the little gods that we don't need in our lives - the enemy, the devil. These are the things that make us feel guilty once we're done letting them have their way with us. We need to let these things go...resist these things!

The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven. - Dueteronomy 28:7

Today, eyeInspire you to submit yourself to God and pray for the strength to resist the enemy. If we resist the devil, "The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is giving you." - Deuteronomy 29:8

Apologies to Mrs. Recy Taylor

It's been a long time coming but, finally Alabama native Recy Taylor is receiving apologies from her home state for the mishandling of her 1944 rape case.

Earlier this week the house came to a unanimous voice vote while issuing "deepest sympathies and solemn regrets' to Recy Taylor.

According to theroot.com, ninety-one-year-old Recy Taylor, who now resides in Florida, was raped by six white men while walking home from church in Abbeville, Alabama. This case landed in the hands of the NAACP activist and anti-rape crusader Rosa Parks, whose main focus at that time was sexual assaults again Black women in the Jim Crow south. Although, the case made international headlines the assailants were never punished. Now, sixty seven years later, Recy Taylor is now getting her fair apologies. Although, it will never take away from the pain and memory of that day it can be looked at as a step forward and a needed reminder of our history.

Word Up 2x!

Today we have twice the amount of knowledge for you! Why? No reason in particular, we're just feeling somewhat largess today. Don't worry though, we promise not to bedaub you with too much information. Take a look at today's words.

bedaub
\ bih-DOB \ , transitive verb;
1. To smudge over; to besmear or soil with anything thick and dirty.
2. To overdecorate; to ornament showily or excessively.

largess
\ lar-ZHES; lar-JES; LAR-jes \ , noun;
also largesse
1. Generous giving (as of gifts or money), often accompanied by condescension.
2. Gifts, money, or other valuables so given.
3. Generosity; liberality.

After facing a natural disaster, many times the country, city or state receives many largesses to help them recover and rebuild.

ToP THIS: Healthy Relationship

If you’re in a healthy relationship, you know it. In fact, you and your mate likely worked hard to get to that point. However, it’s not always a clear when we’re NOT in a healthy love relationship. Why? Well, we usually carry on relationships in ways that we learned from others—and to us it seems normal. We may not realize that smiling, happy couples have problems behind closed doors. The healthy relationship signs below are meant to open your eyes to what healthy relationships are all about. It’s not all smiles and kissy-face; but it’s real. Happy reading!

A healthy relationship is when you can be your true selves with each other. You feel comfortable sharing your deepest thoughts, fears, and emotions with each other. You rarely lie to each other, but you also refrain from being brutally honest.

You respect each others’ privacy. You give each other space and/or “Me time.” You make it through rough times as a couple without splitting up.You and your mate completely deal with your problems, refusing to leave them unresolved until resentments form. You both listen without interrupting. You don’t tell each other what you should or shouldn’t think/feel, but in case you do, you forgive each other for mistakes.

In having a healthy relationship, you must have a strong friendship. You speak each others’ Love Language, even if it’s different from your own. You willingly make sacrifices for each other. You share mutual interests and activities. There is mutual trust and dedication.

You treat each other the way you would like to be treated, not necessarily the way you feel you’re being treated at the moment. You respect each others’ individuality and make the most of your differences. You act as each others’ backbone, providing loving support without guilt. You share spiritual beliefs or a spiritual connection. You show sensitivity to each others’ needs. You discuss and negotiate instead of fighting. Each partner takes responsibility for their own thoughts and feelings.

In addition to loving each other, you genuinely like each other. You don’t judge or force your opinions on each other. You take quality time to nurture your relationship. Both partners maintains his/her own set of boundaries and respects the boundaries of the other. You are both attentive to the needs of yourself and the other. You enjoy physical contact (hugs, kisses, cuddling) together. You show appreciation for each other. You communicate openly and meaningfully with each other.

Hardship, uncertainty, and disagreements are accepted as a part of life. You agree (or genuinely agree to disagree) on financial matters. There is equal power between you and your mate. You keep your expectations of each other in check. You genuinely apologize to one another when feelings are hurt. You and your mate speak up assertively instead of expecting the other to read minds. You both eliminate passive aggressive behavior (ignoring, silent treatment, eye rolling, stomping, hanging up the phone) as much as possible. You have a strong sense of interdependence (mutual responsibility) to each other rather than dependence or co-dependence.

Most importantly, you CAN live without each other, but you choose each other over every alternative choice.

Every relationship has its challenges. Instead of using the signs that you’re in a healthy relationship as a way to judge yourself and your mate, use them as a guide to growth. After all, relationship success is a part of self-improvement success.

Women in the Arts Museum

Have you ever been to Washington, DC? Well I haven't, but when I do go to visit, I will definitely take some time out to visit the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

The National Museum of Women in the Arts, in Washington, DC, is the only museum in the world that focuses on the achievements of women artists. The museum's permanent collection includes more than 3,000 works of art, from sculpture to paintings to photography, and covers the 16th through 21st centuries.

Isn't that cool?! I wish there was one in NY, but now I have a reason to travel. In the closing of National Women's History Month, I hope you've all been inspired to learn more about the great things the women of this world accomplish! Here are some works from the NMWA. Happy viewing.

A Passion for Service

Caring is sharing, I've heard said and I agree. In many cases we as a people are helped; individually and collectively. It may not be possible that we always have something to spare, but assistance is not always monetary. It can be good advice, or even an ear to listen. I wake up everyday grateful for my support system and the blessings I have received from up above. I encourage everyone not take one moment for granted, and when able, HELP ANOTHER.

I would like to pass on some information regarding opportunities to lend a hand in NYC:

- Now, through April 22nd you can donate lightly warn shoes to Soles4Souls who are collecting said items in an effort to fight the war on poverty, and help those in need of shoes. You can drop your donation off to Community Christian Church located at 145 W. 110th Street or visit their website for more locations.

- This coming Sunday, April 3rd non-profit Best Buddies helps students with intellectual disabilities. The second Annual Best Buddies NYC Friendship Walk will be held in Washington Square Park. Check in is at 930 A.M. and there is no registration fee.

Get out in the community and be of service. What better way to live, spread inspiration and love?!

elleELLEeye! It's been way too long, I've truly missed you so. I have been busy with school, class, hw, etc. But the lovely eyes in the team have been holding us down.

I've been thinking a lot about LOVE lately and so I wanted to spread some love to you.
Did you know that ...

Love is more action and less feeling? I mean yes, there are feelings involved, but if you say you love someone and don't act like it... that's not love. (1 Corinthians 13:4-8 will tell you all about what love is/isn't)

I challenge you all to walk in love today. Thats what elleELLEeye is all about!

eyeInspire: Keep Trusting

Many times we find it difficult to trust in God when so many things are going wrong in our lives. This is just a test of our faith. God isn't responsible for the "wrongs", but when those things do show up in our lives, He's there to make sure we're equipped with what we need to overcome. But how can He cover us in times of hardship if we don't trust that he can do all things? For the Word says,

"You keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you."
— Isaiah 26:3

Once you learn to fully put your trust in God, He will give you peace; perfect peace. Think about it: If we trust the Lord with our worries, money problems, heartache, sickness, depression and lack of, how peaceful would our lives be? If you've been trusting God for something that has yet to manifest, just know that His good and perfect will won't disappoint us. The scripture says those "whose mind is stayed on you" will be kept in perfect peace. Keep your mind on God and keep trusting him for your spiritual breakthrough and He will provide. Trust!

My Word

The word of the day is...

eschew

\ es-CHOO \ , transitive verb;

What does that mean? To shun; to avoid (as something wrong or distasteful). It's pretty self explanatory, but if you want to use it in a sentence, you can try something like this:

After partying hard in college for four years, Greg eschewed the thought of even drinking alcohol as a post-graduate.

What other forms can you use it in? [eschewed or eschewing]

JUNK FOoD: Sometimes FAME Kills

"The album is what I would like them to talk about" how idealistic, and certainly preferable in the case, of Chris Brown as he spoke with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America recently. His objective was to promote his album F.A.M.E which hit stores on March 22nd; however, things sharply took a turn for the worst ending in Breezy trashing the dressing room and leaving the ABC studios shirtless. If you follow the old consideration, "Bad publicity is better than no publicity", you might chance putting a positive spin on this occurence. BUT if you're like the rest of us, you will agree that this did not help an already considerably fledgeling public opinion.

In theory, yes Chris Brown should've been able to concentrate on the good and his album release - but in reality, the chances of him dancing his way into people's hearts might never happen. This is show-business folks, and that's what the people want, a show.

As an ABC spokesperson put it, "As always, we asked questions that are relevant and newsworthy, and that's what we did in this interview with Mr. Brown." When its all said and done, the media has to do their job just as Chris has to do his. I wonder how he would rate that performance?

"These words are a chance to be remembered and reprised"

Feeling grumpy? Tense? Depressed? Are you crying a lot? Do you have a bloated stomach, acne, or slight weight gain?

You might have Premenstrual Syndrome or as we like to abbreviate it - PMS!

Often times guys make fun of us for it. But they have no idea it is very normal to experience PMS a few days before your period.

But did you know you can AVOID PMS (and not just by getting rid of the men in your life with a shotgun)...

Here are some common, yet helpful ways to check those hormones:

1. Eat less sugar and fat.

2. Eat less salts (helps to avoid bloating)

3. Drink less caffeine (helps to avoid breast aches, and feeling irritable)

4. Eat smaller meals during the day rather than big ones.

5. Sleep at least 8 hours a day.

6. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, 4-6x per week.

7. Try to keep your work, sleep, and fitness schedule regular.

Hope these tips help some. Lord knows we all need it when it comes to the monthly!

After all, He created us uniquely and wonderfully made as His very own:

eyeInspire: Give Props

"the LORD has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes." - Psalm 118:23 NIV

Have you ever done something that you may not had been able to do if it weren't for someone else? I'm sure we've all been there. But when this happens and we get praise for doing it, do we take all the credit, or do we give props where they are due? Sometimes it's easy to just say thank you and smile, but the right thing to do is humble yourself and let others know that it wasn't you who accomplished that task alone.

How many times have you been in a group project and just rode along for the ride and came out with an A? Yea, you got that A, but it wasn't because of the work you put in. Many times we tend to do this without even noticing. How many of us stop to give props and glory to God for all that he has provided to us to make us able to do what we do? Luke 2:14 says "Glory to God in the highest heaven..." Never shortchange or forget to give praises to God because without Him, we'd just be here capable of nothing. He is everything imaginable. He is our victory and our joy. Not only that, but believe it or not, He works through others. He uses our friends, coworkers, managers, etc. as His vessels to use us.

Today, eyeInspire you to give props where props are due. It doesn't have to be anything extravagant, all it takes is a simple "Thank you Lord, all the glory belongs to you."

How Do You Rate on A Date?

I was running through the Metro newspaper on my train ride this morning, and I came across this tidbit about dinner date etiquette. I find it interesting how things such as these natural acts can warrant a "How-to" manual; but then again Barnes and Nobles sells a "..For Dummies" book for just about everything imagineable.

In retrospect when in dire straits, I can see the benefit of dating tips. Consider that crucial moment where you go blank and can't remember to a tee what your plan for success was. There is a "How To" that can help. When was the last time you met that person whom you deemed "The One"; dropped the ball when it came time to go out on a date? If you did, this is for you. Now I can't guarantee that a second chance is in your future, but if it is, TAKE ADVANTAGE! This time around follow the blueprint and you too can be a dinner date success:

1. Never sit next to each other on one side of a table unless you’re being filmed for a reality TV show. Be adults and sit facing each other. The romance of staring into each other’s eyes over a candlelit table should be enough.

2. Guys, don’t order for the woman. She’s an adult: She can make up her own mind and speak for herself.

3. Don’t order “just a salad.” This tells your date you’d rather count calories than embrace the date and all its pleasures, including the gastronomic ones. But don’t order the lobster, unless it’s been clearly established that you’re paying.

4. If you have to use the powder room, just say, “Excuse me, please.” Your date needn’t know specifics.

5. No cell phones at the table, please, even if you’re dining at Denny’s. (Good manners don’t discriminate against even the tackiest of eating establishments.) If you absolutely, positively must take a call, keep your phone on vibrate, but don’t whip it out. Wait for an appropriate pause in conversation to excuse yourself from the table to take the call. However, it had better be an emergency.

6. Don’t start eating until your date has also been served. Don’t touch your silverware until his or her dish has made contact with the table linen. Even if your date insists you go ahead.

7. Discussing the etymology of “The Dirty Sanchez” is unacceptable dinner conversation — save that for the bar.

8. Don’t gesture with your silverware.

9. Do not ask to sample your date’s plate unless he or she offers first. Some people are funny about that. On the other hand, if your date is clearly suffering from entree envy, consider offering a trade.

10. Be courteous to the wait-staff. Never snap, clap, cry “Waiter!” or worse, “Garcon!” Wait until you catch your server’s eye, then nod, smile or subtly raise your hand. If you’re rude to the service industry professionals, it tells your date that you have the potential to be rude to anyone. And finally, if you’re picking up the bill, then tip 20 percent unless you want to look like a cheapskate.

We all know first impressions are lasting, and presentation is paramount. Quality time is like an intereview when courting. Don't kid yourself by assuming that you know everyting about the intricacies of dating. An old dog can learn new tricks; everyday of your life is an opportunity to do better than before. Ever wondered why your love life never improves? The reason is, YOU NEVER IMPROVE. Here's your chance.

My Word is Your Word

Have you ever gone shopping? Well of course you have. How many times has the salesperson, whether you were buying clothes, shoes or a car tell you how great you looked in the item? Did they tell you how beautiful you would look if you owned it, or how you would be the envy of your friends? How about that suit that you just looked so dapper in that you knew would put you in the hole, but you were so convinced by the sales associate that you had to buy it? It happens to the best of us. And this is what we call...

eyeInspire: Let Go, Let God

Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don't forget to thank Him for His answers. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ. - Philippians 4:6-7 NIV

Worry, pain, anger, financial stumps, hurt, pain, agony, jealous, fear, envy...all these things and guess how many you can God can handle? All of them. Isn't that a great thing to know? There are many times where our own pride gets in the way of us letting go of what we can't fix on our own, and trusting that with God's strength, grace and mercy, anything is possible.

There are so many things that we, as humans try to take control of that are just out of our hands. For instance: Some may hold on to past relationships, still trying to fix what they think is wrong. Others may try to fight an addiction without seeking any help but themselves. One may What should we do if not those things? Be faithful to God' word. Be obedient to the laws he laid out for us. Love others, pray and build a relationship with God. He wants to bless you, but if you're trying to keep hold of the steering wheel while juggling the cares of the world, you're bound to crash. It's okay to use auto-pilot once in a while.

Today, eyeHope to inspire you to let go of everything that has hurt you, made you angry, given you a headache and surrender those thoughts, problems and issues to God. Watch how He works.

The Trunk Sale

Calling all fashionistas! There is a trunk sale, or shall I say "The Trunk Sale", going on this weekend; Saturday March 12th.

eyeInspire: Pray Confidently

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. - 1 John 5:14-15 (NIV)
How many times have you prayed for something? How many of those times have you wondered why those prayers went unanswered? It's not that your prayers are every unanswered, but what happens is that God will answer prayers in unexpected ways. What the Bible talks about in 1 John 5:14 is the confidence we have in approaching God. How confident are you that God can make any and everything happen? Do you trust that God will come through for you? Sometimes we don't and that is why we don't get the answer we want when we pray.

If you are truly seeking God and his will for your life, you have to have faith! Faith isn't just saying you believe, but showing God that you trust him wholeheartedly. That's the confidence he's talking about. Think about the confidence that you have in your parents, that they will always be able to provide for you no matter what. Do you realize that sometimes they struggle, but always pull through for you? It didn't happen for them on their own strength, but by God's grace and mercy and the faith that they have in Him. If you truly trust and believe, lay all your cares and worries on him and watch him work. The next time you pray, eyeInspire you to pray in faith and in confidence.

She also takes time to inform others in the community about ways to lose weight and how important it is to be aware of your own bad habits. When she partnered with Sister-to-Sister International Inc., an organization geared toward maintaining the wellness of women of color, she provided several guidelines on how to shed pounds at a health fair.

You know I was going to share:

1. Write Everything You Eat Down.
2 Measure your food: you can use cups and spoons as a reference.
3. Make a calorie goal.
4. 4Plan your meals.
5. Eat you favorite foods: happy eyes = happy stomachs.
6. Get a buddy: share weight loss tips, compete friendly, and encourage one another.
7 Aim for variety: vary your choices, try a different cereal, etc.
8. Make substitutions when possible.
9. Embellish: grated parmesan over your food, a paper umbrella for your drink, etc.
10. Blue Moon Rule: every once in a while, treat yourself.

We are thankful to Maudene Nelson’s many contributions to her community and beyond.

Do you know a female who is a making a difference near you?

BOSS Ladies Are Too Deep

Our eyes were in attendance at Barnard College this past weekend for an event that was Too Deep. The Barnard Organization of Soul Sisters (BOSS) was founded in 1968. As a student organization dedicated to celebrating black womanhood, they highlight important issues in the Afro-American community at Barnard and Columbia. BOSS also fosters fellowship in the form of sisterhood among women of color.

In the midst of celebrating women,  BOSS had Too Deep give a presentation on racism, sex, sisterhood, and more. Too Deep Entertainment is a multi-cultural performing arts group committed to empowering and educating the community, fostering social change, and positively influencing the knowledge, behaviors and attitudes of its audiences. Their mission is to "educate and empower through entertainment." And they do exactly that wherever they perform.

eyeReview: Unknown

This weekend, the box office offered a few movies that caught my interest. Just Go With It, starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston was one of them, but once we got to the theater, we decided to go with the unknown. Unknown, is a film starring actor Liam Neeson and is based on the 2003 French novel published in English as Out of My Head, by Didier van Cauwelaert.

I really didn't know what to expect since I didn't read a synopsis of the film, or see the trailer; however, the movie drew me in with intuition and anxiety within the first 10 minutes. With the many puzzling moments of the film, it was easy for you to play detective and try to figure out only what you would at the end. The story line was interesting and of none I have seen before. I'll give Unknown 4/5 eyes. If you're interested in seeing the movie for yourself, check out the trailer below. Happy watching!

eyeInspire: Reach Out & Be Used

God breaks into a life in a spectacular manner, and sometimes conversion is a quiet experience.

But what exactly is conversion? Something that Saul came to know very well. Conversion, by definition, is a change in character, form, or function; or a spiritual change from sinfulness to righteousness. In the story of Saul and Ananias, it became clear that Saul was on the road to becoming an evil man, but God chose to use Ananias in the process of converting Saul. Ananias questioned God when it came to this, but in the end did what God told him to do, and that was go to Saul (who was blinded) so that he could see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes we assume that people are beyond God's reach. But NOTHING is too big for God. Think about the people that testify about how bad they were or how far they were from God's will. When these same people give testimonies, they're witnessing how great God's grace and mercy is.

Saul's story challenges those assumptions, as should we. God blinded Saul in order for him to see again, but when he was blessed with a new sight, he was converted through God. We have to embrace those who are far from God, because they can be converted through us. As God wants to use us as instruments, just as he did Saul. Jesus said "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name..." Acts 9:15 We never know how God will chose to use us or those around us.

Remember, every saint has a past and every sinner has a future. eyeInspire you to reach out to those around you and let God use you.

If you don't know the story of the Saul's Conversion, read all about it in Acts 9:1-19

WHM Spotlight: Toni Morrison

Today, our spotlight is on Toni Morrison.

Why? For her stellar accomplishments in the world of African American Literature.

Toni Morrison is a Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, editor, and professor.

Her novels are known for their epic themes, vivid dialogue, and richly detailed black characters. Among her best known novels are The Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon and Beloved.

Morrison began writing fiction as part of an informal group of poets and writers at Howard University who met to discuss their work. She went to one meeting with a short story about a black girl who longed to have blue eyes. The story later evolved into her first novel, The Bluest Eye (1970), which she wrote while raising two children and teaching at Howard.

Her list of works, nominations, and awards go on and on. We salute Ms. Morrison for her accomplishments and the dent she's made in our world. She's definitely worth a Women's History Month Spotlight!

K.I.S.S. with the Weight Loss!

Who said weight loss had to be so complicated and so dang-on expensive?!

Here are some small ways to lose weight, and keep money closer to your pocket!

1. Eat more beans- People who eat beans tend to weigh over five pounds lighter than people who skip out on them. They also open the airflow if you know what I mean...hehe.

2. Drink more water-Adding at least four more cups of water can boost your weight loss.

3. Laugh at a Movie - A study has shown that serious movies cause people to snack more often than flicks that make you happy.

4. Leave during the commercials- It may sound crazy but people actually eat less junk food when they avoid commercials because it is not being advertised to them.

Who would have thought?

eyeListen: "Jam" & "21st Century Girl"

The world of pop music is making a bigger splash each and everyday. Today we have releases from rising "Popstars" Kim Kardashian and Willow Smith. Despite the prior leakage of her debut single, Kim Kardashian officially released "Jam" produced by The Dream on Ryan Seacrest's radio show today. After hearing the track, I was just as surprised as hearing the debut of "Tardy for the Party" by Kim Zolciac. Don't get me wrong, the track is cool, but I wasn't blown away or anything. Most of the track is auto-tuned, laced with vocals from The Dream. I give it to Kim for branding herself in a number of different markets. One thing you can't deny is the girl knowing how to keep the money rolling in.

With Willow's undeniable success with her single "Whip My Hair", it's no mistaking that she has the talent and charisma to become the new "It" girl of the industry. She recently premiered a snippet of her upcoming single "21st Century Girl" on Oprah's Most Talented Kids episode.
The 10-year-old has been compared to Rihanna for her sound and fashion sense. We can only imagine that her success will be just as great. Peep the snippet of "21st Century Girl" & Kim's "Jam" below and be sure to leave us your opinions. Happy listening!
