eyeRemember: Shannon Tavarez

At just 11 years-old, 'Lion King' Broadway star, Shannon Tavarez loss her battle to leukemia. The young fighter played the role of Young Nala, and succumbed to the disease after a umbilical cord transplant she had at the end of the summer. Many celebs, including Beyonce and Alicia Keys rallied support for her. Unfortunately, a bone marrow match could not be found.

Our hearts go out to her family, as a few of us from Team elleELLEeye know what it is like to know someone who passed from this disease, is still dealing with it, or know someone who has died young as a result of a terminal illness.

Hey readers! Roughly a month ago, Team elleELLEeye, put on our first event:

The event acted as a benefit concert for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, at Santos Party House in NYC. The concert feature showcased five talented acts; Young Flame, Eric Sosa, M.A.E, Oxymorrons, and Ayindé. The show was opened up by artists from Epiff@ny Music, music was provided by DJ ENIGM@, and the show itself was hosted by our friend, Miguel Hernandez. There were drinks, Candy Land specials, candy, cupcakes, th whole 9, but most of all, a GREAT time.

All of the performer smashed their sets and we raised over $1000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, thanks to you all! Footage will be available soon, but for now you can enjoy some snapshot from those that attended. If you weren't there, you missed one hell of a show, but we missed you!

eyeCare: Leukemia-Lymphoma Society

What is Leukemia?

Leukemia is the general term used to describe four different disease-types called:

Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML), and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).

The terms lymphocytic or lymphoblastic indicate that the cancerous change takes place in a type of marrow cell that forms lymphocytes. The terms myelogenous or myeloid indicate that the cell change takes place in a type of marrow cell that normally goes on to form red cells, some types of white cells, and platelets.

Our philanthropy is the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society. What can we do to help? Make a donation to help find a cure, organize a walk in your area, volunteer, spread awareness. We'll keep you up-to-date with the event we plan to hold.

Season of Giving

It's the most wonderful time of the year...

...for some of us that is. I know we're all tired of hearing that question every time we walk into a store "Would you like to make a donation..." I'm sure at the word donation our minds just block out the rest as we just smile and say no. Wait, then there are those people who say..."I already donate on my own" - how true that is... But there are some of us who know what it's like or have been place in situations where they wished someone would have gave to a family memember or friend who suffering from cancer, diabetes, aids, etc.

Well here's your chance! With elle ELLE eye being "Proud supporters of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society", we need your help. Here's what we want you to do:

1. Google any disease
2.Find an organization in relation to that disease that is trying to make a difference.
3. Donate to that orgaization in their efforts to save a life. ((OR)) Click on the "How Can I Help" link.
4. That's it!

Walk it Out

If you're looking for something to do this month, why not walk? I'm not talking about walking aimlessly, unless you enjoy that, but this time, why not walk with a cause? The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk is the nation's night to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer.

Walks take place in communities throughout the United States and Canada, typically in the fall. On these special nights, thousands of participants carry illuminated balloons and raise funds for vital, lifesaving research and patient services.

"When you or someone you love has cancer, it can turn your world upside down and leave you in a dark and lonely place. But there's something you can do to bring light and hope..."

Anyone can take part - children, adults and seniors are all welcome. This is a casual fundraising walk with no fitness requirements. There are many ways you can help. You can register to walk individually or, even better, as part of a team; just make a donation online; or become a volunteer or sponsor/partner.

Funds raised through Light The Night Walk support the work of hundreds of the world's best and brightest researchers in their search for better therapies and cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Can't make it to NYC? Find out where you can walk here.

eyePoll: Philanthropy The Leukemia and Lyphoma Society

As you know, elle elle eye wants to become a donator to a charity, and when I asked you to help me vote on three organizations that all meant a lot to me, here were the results!

67% "The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society"
20% "Juvenille Diabetes Research Foundation"
13% "Make A Wish Foundation"

Here is some information about the diseases: Blood cancers such as leukemia, Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes are cancers that originate in the bone marrow or lymphatic tissues. They are considered to be related cancers because they involve the uncontrolled growth of cells with similar functions and origins. The diseases result from an acquired genetic injury to the DNA of a single cell, which becomes abnormal (malignant) and multiplies continuously. The accumulation of malignant cells interferes with the body's production of healthy blood cells.

When you make a donation to elle.elle.eye, 75% of it will go to the The Leukemia and Lyphoma Society and the other 25% will go to elle.elle.eye itself to maintain the site. For questions about donations, email elleelleeye@gmail.com. Thank you in advance for your support. This means a lot to me so I will appreciate all donations, even if it's just $1.00.
