Drake Talks Looks vs. Music in Paper Mag

Drizzy Drake covers the new Paper Magazine. Inside he touches on some points that really stuck with me. I myself am a huge proponent of letting substance take precedent over looks. Now by no means am I cosigning anyting that doesn't add up to always being presentable; however, as you and I know things have gotten out of hand. People are not judged by whom they are, as much as how they look. I don't want to sound hypocritical, because I love a beautiful woman just as much as the next, but at some point we need to learn that looks aren't the end all be all. SUBSTANCE MATTERS. When weighing in with his POV Drizzy said:

"It’s funny — the thing that I hear the least is ‘Drake makes bad music.’ People always have something to say about the way I look or the way I dress. People nitpick at my physical appearance more than my music, which is fine with me because when I look in the mirror, I know I’m not an unattractive person."(theybf.com)

For some time now I have been telling people that I like this dude's music and persona. He has a simple vibe to him that's easy to support. He doesn't come across as a "build-a-bear", and when he speaks you can tell that he's sincere. Drake is realistic and down-to-earth, what more can you ask for?

It's lonely at the top, and with liberty comes responsibility and expectation; let Drake tell you:
"I wake up and I’m scared to flip my phone over because I don’t know what songs have leaked or what some girl has said what about me. I don’t let it show because I care too much about the people around me and I need them to feel like I’m solid. No matter how much I may be going crazy inside, I always keep my composure for the sake of the people around me."

How do you feel about the "image" factor that plays into the role of life; and the music industry? COMMENT!

Drake's 15 Minutes Started...

"Money just changed everything, I wonder how life without it will go. My fifteen minutes started an hour ago." With the career Drake has had thus far, I hope to see countless amounts of "fifteen minute" moments. After watching his documentary on MTV, "Drake: Better Than Good Enough", I have found a new love for Drake. As a songwriter and rapper myself, Drake is one artist that inspires me to write when I listen to his music. The show provoked a number of emotions from myself, and I'm sure his fans were pleased with it as well. He's a gifted, humble individual who has not taken advantage of the success that he has had to date. The fact that he's humbled enough to want to get better and grow within the craft that has his name on magazine covers, music charts and television screens, is incredible. I admire him. If you missed the full documentary, check out the full video in parts here (also, check out his performance on Jay Leno from last night). Happy watching!

From the Concrete, A Rose

Honestly, Kanye saved my life, and I don’t even think about what I would have been; I just think about what I’m gonna be."

Gratitude is a virtue and it is evident in aforementioned words by Miss Amber Rose. For quite some time now, she has been in the public eye piggybacking my man Kanye West; resulting in one of the biggest come-ups since Robin Givens. I'm not judging, but hey call a spade a spade - you know? Most recently, reports have titled the "couple" as separated, and rumor has it that he's over here and she's over there. But let's remember a thing called LOYALTY; and in this edition of her 15 minutes of fame (interview with YRB Magazine) she was loyal. "Why keep it 100 when you can keep it 103?" that's what my man Jeezy says, and I agree. Why focus on what was, when you can prepare for and plan what's gonna happen. Words to live by.

As it remains you can say what you want about her. Sure, go ahead and mention that she just got a million dollar settlement with Kanye that bans her from speaking on their relationship; so what! Well maybe that did have something to do with the praise, but whose keeping tabs? Listen to the message not the messenger.

Feel free to share your thoughts.

These words are a chance to be remembered and reprised. - Basquiat

Rihanna Rings Elle's Bell

Slowly, but surely, Rihanna is creeping her way back into the limelight. On the cover of the July cover of one of the biggest fashion magazines in the industry, Elle, we'll have something else to look forward to. From her recently hair change to her "Rockstar 101" video, we can only wonder what is next for the superstar. And that would be her "Last Girl On Earth" tour with special guest, Ke$ha. In her interview, Rihanna talks fashion, relationships, and of course...Chris. Here's a snippet of the interview:

On her new beau, Matt Kemp: “I have a boyfriend. I’m so happy. I feel really comfortable, and it’s so easy. I have such a chaotic life, but at the end of the day, that is just my peace. It keeps me sane, really, talking to him and talking to my family.”

On designers she admires: “It’s clear there are definitely fewer black women in the high-fashion industry. One of the things I respected most about Gucci was that they did a print campaign with me. I’m a black girl on a fashion spread for Gucci—that was a big deal. I respect designers who aren’t afraid to go outside the box. I went to a Jean Paul Gaultier show, and I saw girls who are thicker than me, beautiful and voluptuous and different ethnicities. That made me so excited. I thought, Okay, I can work that, for sure.”

On the past year: “A year ago, I was very confused. Because [Chris Brown] was my best friend. All of a sudden, one night changed our whole lives—not only our friendship, but our lives. I wanted to wake up one day and just not have that pain anymore. I wanted to be with him again or get over him—it was either-or. I just didn’t want to feel the pain, the confusion.”

On turning her dream of popstardom into reality: “If I were in Barbados still, I would be dreaming about this. I asked for it, and I love it, so why am I complaining? My first day on tour, I remember saying ‘I’m so tired—this is so much.’ Then I thought, What the fuck? You asked for this—you prayed to God to tour like Madonna.”

You can find the July issue of Elle on newsstands Tuesday, June 15th. Also, check out footage from the behind-the-scences photoshoot with photographer, Tom Munro. Happy watching!

The Words of Lyor Cohen

"Experience is the best teacher."

I'm sure you've heard this saying a million times, and if you had a dollar for all of those times, as well as I, we'd be in the South of France somewhere partying. Since we don't you are here, and so am I...(lmao..it's not that bad. Stop pouting.)

The following words I have for you today come from Lyor Cohen; the music mogul and the man who brought us Jay-Z, Ashanti, DMX, Bom Jovi, Ja Rule, and a host of others during his time at Def Jam Records. Now as the head of Warner Music Group, he's still flooding the music industry with quality.

"This generation is handicapped by the era of excess. I grew up in an era of love and swimming upstream, determined to prove people wrong. We had chips on our shoulders, like, 'We belong here.' But now it's the most popular, biggest segment of the industry. We've had a decade of private planes and Maybachs. That's not the era that I came from. The era I came from, I had zero expectation that I was going to make any money.

I was determined to prove to the gatekeepers of the industry that we had a place here and we weren't going to relinquish our opportunity. I never had to keep up with nobody because we were all on subways. So it was never like, "My subway is bigger and flyer than your subway." And there was a real fraternal order. We were backstage with Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring, and we had zero f***ing money. But everybody wanted us in the VIP room because we were doing something that was so important to them. People understood that it wasn't if it was going to happen, it was when it was going to happen." (Lyor Cohen)

As I read this interview Cohen did with HipHopDX, I was taken aback. A lot of his sentiment I shared, and I felt I had to share it with you. I too look around and find myself, and you (even if you don't want to admit it) hampered by a generation of excess. Less is no longer more, and tact is unfamiliar. How shall we survive, I don't know. Devil's advocate I am not, although it's very fun, I am trying to be honest. Rockstar living has taken over. Everyone is a star in the making, are they not? Worth more than the whole; I support confidence, not overconfidence.

I wish I lived in the era that Cohen speaks of; where potential brought you attention, and substance reigned supreme. Can anyone tell me how to get there? Do I click my heels twice? I know this is not Kansas, but can I get it on 7th Ave (Harlem that is). If not, I guess for now I can dream. Will you dream with me, that is if you feel how I feel... My subway is not bigger than yours, neither is my wardrobe closet. As I told you before I am here for the regular Joe's and Josie's (politically correct). Embrace me.

VANITY effFAIR

“Precious” star Gabourey Sidibe is making a big impact on the Hollywood scene. Big enough that it has landed her features in the latest issues of Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar. It's good to see a "plus-sized" girl doing her thing despite of the nearly concrete mold that is set by the media. Hopefully this is one of many steps to break the stereotypes of those who cover magazines. Vanity Fair is dedicating their entire issue to plus size models. Gabourey tells Harper’s Bazaar on her shoot:

"I feel like a model. It justifies everyone in my life who told me I wouldn’t be anything until I lost weight. It justifies that little girl who cried because she didn’t think she could be in front of the camera. And it’s for other girls who feel like they can’t do this or that and feel like they’re not pretty and not worthy of having their photo taken."

Gabourey On her Confidence:

People always ask me, ‘You have so much confidence. Where did that come from?’ It came from me. One day I decided that I was beautiful, and so I carried out my life as if I was a beautiful girl. I wear colors that I really like, I wear makeup that makes me feel pretty, and it really helps. It doesn’t have anything to do with how the world perceives you. What matters is what you see. Your body is your temple, it’s your home, and you must decorate it.”
Take a glimpse at her video interview:

"Crawl": F or f ?!

After watching that dreadful 106 & Park interview with Chris Brown and Rocsi yesterday, I was happy that I remembered to tune into the Wendy Williams Show this morning. It's nice to see people who can do good interviews nowadays. She treated him like she would any other day and her character remained Wendy unlike Rosci who tried to portray this serious, Diane Sawyer, Oprah wannabe character on 106 and Park. I bet the commercial breaks were pretty awkward between them two. Anyway, check out his interview with Wendy William and the debut of his video for his single "Crawl" featuring Cassie as his leading lady. Happy watching!

Boom Ba Yay Shanelle

What do Fried Twinkies, mending broken hearts, the life of a performer and concerts in Africa all have in common? They're all things that were talked about on October 2, 2009 when elleELLEeye sat down with Miss Shanelle Gabriel! Who is Shanelle Gabriel you ask? She's a poet, singer, songwriter and inspiration to anyone living with Lupus.

Here's what happened when we met up with Shanelle in NYC for an interview:

We know that you grew up singing in church, but what inspired you to want to become a performer? I graduated in 2006 from Utica College with a degree in Communication Arts. I like working with kids and I worked at Harlem Children’s Zone. After working there, I worked at a financial company for 9 months and that just put me to sleep so I needed something that would keep me going. You should do something you love rather than what other want you to do. I didn’t fall asleep on stage so I knew that performing was it. I knew that I could write but I had to ask myself,

"Can I write for people to listen to me?"
and that's when I began slam poetry.

What’s your favorite childhood memory? After Christmas, or any holiday my sisters and I would play music, sing and dance.

When did you start performing? I think I was 11-years-old.

Do you remember what your first performance was like? I was performing at Nuyorican Poetry Café and the paper in my hand was shaking. No wait...that wasn’t the first time. It was when I sang "Send Me I’ll Go" at church and I had attitude!

Do you have an alter ego when you perform? No, no Sasha Fierce here.

“I’m me!"
It’s important for me to be myself on stage because that’s what the people want to see.

Stage fright? No, but before a performance I get a little anxious.

What’s your favorite piece to perform? It changes; I’m getting a little tired of "Why I Love You". But "Possibilities" would be my favorite. It’s the first time I combined singing and poetry. Also, I think that this poem is so universal, it can apply to you whether it relates to love, work, etc. everyone can relate to it.

How’d you get started with HBO Def Poetry Jam? They didn’t find me I found them. I submitted my work and felt real excited about the whole thing...until I got to the dressing room and knew everyone that was there [laughs]. It was a lot like nationals. But Stan Lathan is cool.

How do you keep your personal and professional life separate? It’s hard to have a personal life. I bring work on stage with me and that’s what makes it great.

How would you define love? My definition of love is so fly, you ready?
"Love is when you and your partner try to out love one another. It’s not one-sided and it's not about getting love back."

What advice do you have to mend a broken heart? Just get over it! Holding onto the wrong person will only hurt you in the end. You’ve gotten over things in the past, so what makes this so different?

What's your guilty pleasure? Fried Twinkies from the "Chip Shop" in Brooklyn.

Name three things you live for. I live to: (1) make people smile, (2) prove others wrong by following my dreams and (3) enjoy life.

What’s the last song you were listening to? "'Til I Collapse" by Eminem.

Who is your favorite celebrity to hang out with? There's a few, I like hanging out with Graph. I went to a party with him and I had a blast. I also met Joe Budden and it was so funny because I didn’t know who he was at first and he’s like "Hi I’m Joe" and I kept saying "You look so familiar". I asked him where he was from and he said Jersey...after a while I realized it was Joe, Joe Budden!

If being a performer wasn’t an option, what would you be doing right now? I would probably be a teacher or a counselor. I feel like you can still be creative and I like to work with people.

What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not performing? Eat. Food! I’m passionate about food!

If sky was the limit, what would be your dream performance? I would have a crazy dope show in Africa, the motherland, and it would be a fundraiser for the Lupus Foundation. The performers would be Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, Michael Jackson (R.I.P.), Jay-Z, and me of course. They would be chanting "Boom Ba Yay Shanelle" and we would all rock out and all perform at the end together. That would be so dope!

What’s next for Shanelle Gabriel? I’m just working on some new tracks for the next album, performing, and writing.

Shanelle was a pleasure to interview and we wish her the best in all that she does! Before we parted ways, she decided to sing elleELLEeye a little something that she's working on. Check it out:

Skye’s the Limit

She's an aspiring singer, songwriter, actress and fashionista! Who, you might ask? Skye Townsend. Yes, Skye is someone you might want to keep an eye on for the future. At just 16-years-old, this young lady has a fire burning deep within that will make her a superstar. Born the daughter of actor, comedian, film director, and writer, Robert Townsend, there's no doubt in our minds that Skye will continue on to do great things. elleELLEeye sat down with Skye (who was accompanied by her best friend Malcolm) and had an east coast to west coast interview via USTREAM. If you missed it live, here's what happened:

When did you start singing?
I was 3-years-old when I started singing.

Do you remember your first performance?
Yes, it was so scary, but I sang "Real Situation" by Bob Marley.

We know that you're a fan of Beyonce, but besides her, who inspires you to pursue music?
Definitely Billy Holiday and Lena Horne.

We saw the Angelique and Skye show on YouTube, are you also considering acting or comedy as a career?
Right now I’m training to become an actress.

What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not making YouTube videos, singing or in school?
Sleep. It's important to get rest and take care of your body.

Do you play any instruments?
I used to play piano when I was younger, but I wasn't disciplined enough to stick with it.

Do you participate in any talent shows in school?
My school doesn't really have any shows like that, but I do participate in anything artistic.

Have you had any offes from record labels yet?
Righ now I can't dicuss that, but I am still unsigned and looking for a deal. I'm focusing on my singing and songwriting.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Oreo Cheesecake.

If you could do a collaboration with any male/female artist who would it be and why?
There are so many amazing people in the industry but I would work with anyone who has a lot of passion and drive. If I had to pick I would work with Wyclef, he's a genius.

What do you want the world to know about Skye?
That I am motivated and serious about what I do. And that I eat, sleep and breathe music.

What’s next for Skye?
I've been working on designing some fashion pieces. I plan to sell these pieces starting bids at $.99 on eBay.com. Other than that, I'm focusing on my singing and songwriting.

We wish Skye the best in all of her endeavors! Keep up with what's she's doing via:

Baby Love

Isn't he the cutest thing you've ever seen?! Introducing Jennifer Hudson’s baby boy, David Otunga Jr., People magazine got the exclusive! Check out the most interesting excerpts from her new interview:

How hard was it keeping your pregnancy under wraps?

"David and I were the only people who knew for a long time. I would forget I was pregnant, it was so easy. I didn’t have any morning sickness, no cravings either. I just thought, ‘Oh, well, we’ll wait until it’ll tell on itself.’ I didn’t show until I was seven months so that made it easy right there."

Your son was delivered via C-section, what was your recovery like?

"Everybody told me how much it was going to hurt afterwards but I think I have a different tolerance for pain than others. By that night after I had the baby, I’m like, ‘Look, I can’t sit in this bed anymore. I’ve got to get up!’ I’ve been up and about since he was born. To me, the pain is no different than when you work out a muscle you’ve never worked out before and it’s sore."

I love watching all of the Jay-Z interviews. You can definitely tell that he's a wise man and handles himself well while being interviewed. One of the rules when interviewing is not ask close-ended questions (yes/no questions)and when he is asked a close ended question he definitely give a yes/no answer; which makes him so funny. eyeLove: Josh Olins Photography

I stumbled upon this great pictures and thought to myself, whoever the photographer is must be fab!And that photographer just happened to be Josh Olins. Open up the just about any magazine known for its cool perspective and you will find his work. Dazed, V, Love, Numero - you name them, he’s in them and with a resume as illustrious as his it’s easy to see why he’s one of the most coveted photographers working right now. Christopher Michael sits down with Josh to discuss his process, what influences his work and of course those incredible group shots.

CM: UK born, NY based (sometimes) where do you attribute the greatest geographical source of your ideas to come from?

Olins: UK based mostly but NYC frequently. I guess as with anyone inspiration can come at home or abroad. NY can be like a movie for me which of course I find inspiring and I guess you get so used to what’s on your doorstep sometimes that you need to step away from it to seek something new and exciting. My ideas are split between the two occasionally coming somewhere at 30,000 ft whilst traveling from A - B but I see things everyday that give me ideas.

Amber Rose in Complex Mag + Interview

Amber Rose...The chrome-domed beauty with a stripper past, who has become a staple of the gossip blogs, already made shaved heads hot this year, and now she’s signed a new contract with Ford Models, and will soon be seen in Kanye’s “Robocop” video. But first up: Amber’s Complex photoshoot.

See, we featured Miss Rose in the 1-page “Women Are Complex, Too” article in our latest issue, but we knew that wouldn’t be enough to satisfy your appetite for the fine Philly dime.

Interview by Joe La Puma of Complex

Complex: Did you always have an eclectic style growing up?

Amber Rose:
Yea, I always looked up to Slash from Guns N’ Roses. I had every single poster of Slash in my room. It was crazy because I grew up in an all-black neighborhood and everybody I went to school with was black. I was the only biracial looking girl in my school, and Slash was biracial too, he was just a fucking rock star. I always wanted to play the guitar. I’ve tried, but other things came up.

Complex: What’s the status of your career?

Amber Rose: Definitely more modeling, I want to change the face of modeling. I want young girls growing up to know that they can actually eat something, and be beautiful and be a model, that they can actually have a real women’s body and do modeling. I want to get into acting. I want to pursue all avenues that I can.

Complex: Recently you’ve been thrust into the world of TMZ and Perez Hilton. How have you been dealing with the gossip blogs?

Amber Rose: This is my life, this is how my life’s been since I was a kid. I’ve always been popular, my name has always been in somebody’s mouth in high school. I don’t lose no sleep over this shit. Some of the stuff, when it’s extremely far-fetched and stupid, I just laugh. I don’t lose a minute of sleep over this.

Complex: Has your recent fame opened more doors for you?

Amber Rose: Obviously, Kanye is a super-duper megastar so he definitely gave me the fast track to the top, and I love him and appreciate him so much for that.

Complex: What’s one thing about ’Ye that really blew you away about him?

Amber Rose: Well, the fact that there can be a noise in the background, or like a windshield wiper and he will start beat-boxing or banging on the dashboard and start doing some type of beat and it sounds so fresh. I remember when he first did something like that and he just closed his eyes, and gets in the mode. I was like, “Wow.” You have to be a genius to that. He’s amazing.

Complex: Speaking of you two, Bossip just reported that you guys were broken up. Is that true?

Amber Rose: Umm, I really can’t talk about that. It’s like when Brad and Angelina were together—you never really knew if they were together or not.

Complex: There’s constant chatter on the blogs about your sexual preference. Are you bisexual?

Amber Rose: Yeah, they label me a bisexual freak stripper that fucks Kanye on a daily basis. [Laughs.] You know: “Amber Rose, the fucking bisexual, dyke, freak, whatever the fuck.” To answer that: I’m extremely open with my sexuality. I can be in love with a woman, I can be in love with a man. I’m not into bestiality [laughs] but as far as humans go, I definitely find beauty in everybody, whether they’re heavy-set, super-skinny, if they’re white, black, Indian, Asian, Spanish. I can see beauty in anybody. I’m not into threesomes or orgies and shit like that. If I see a women and I think she’s beautiful and I like her, and she likes me back we can definitely try to be in a relationship together.

Complex: There’s going to be a time when people are going to ask you about whether you and Kanye are gonna take the relationship to the next level or if it’s just a fling.

Amber Rose: Because we’re in a public eye, everybody wants to know what goes on, but we’re human beings. We have arguments—people have arguments, mothers and daughters have arguments, it’s only natural. Kanye is amazing, he’s a great person, he treats me wonderful, we have a great time together. I genuinely care for him.

Complex: How do you respond to people saying this whole Kanye situation is a publicity stunt?

Amber Rose: Well, my intentions when I met Kanye was to do his video, keep it very professional and we really started to like each other. It just so happened that he started liking me and I started liking him. It’s not a publicity stunt, it’s just human beings, man. I love Kanye as a person, he’s a great person, he’s super-talented. I love him for a lot of different reasons.

eyeWatch: Drake Interview

Aubrey "Drake" Graham gets interviewed by Darius Brown from ABC News and speaks on various topics from starting off on "Degrassi: The Next Generation" to how he met Lil Wayne and his links to Rihanna.

It seems like everything is coming up roses for Drizzy, but that wasn’t always the case. Speaking with ABC News, he revealed he suffered some struggles in his childhood. “I was actually hurt by a lot of the things that happened throughout the course of my life,” Drake told ABC’s Darius Brown. “I had to become a man very quickly and be the backbone for a woman who I love with all my heart, my mother.”

Although he was a working actor since the age of 14 as a cast member of the popular Canadian-based teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation, he would often travel back and forth between Toronto and Memphis, Tennessee to see his father, who split from his mother at a very young age.

He essentially lived in two different worlds; he lived in a very upper-class part of Toronto, and, when in Memphis, was told he was “the furthest thing from hood.” But Drake says image-conscious rap fans can still relate to him because of his experiences. “I saw my dad get arrested by like a swat team at the border for trying to crossover.” He added, “I’ve seen things that didn’t make me happy. They were character building. That’s why I think people in the hood can still connect with what I’m saying even though I’m not saying ‘yeah I got crack in my pocket’ ’cause that wasn’t my struggle necessarily, [but] I speak from a place that’s just human emotion.” Here is the video of the interview:
