eyeIntroduce to You, D.O.S.

How do you define success? Looking for an example? I can give you two; Young Nyse and McFly. These artists make up the Rap/Electro-Hop duo, D.O.S. (Definition Of Success). Not only is their name inspiring, but they are living examples of what success is. Currently a part of the Freshman 15 Entertainment/TrackTeam Records Camp, D.O.S. are two young black men making it out of the South Bronx with college educations, and a positive outlook on life. They are focused on making music, all the while pursuing a career in the music industry. D.O.S. proves that their inspiration comes from living, and say that they are inspired by any and everything.
Musically we draw from artist we grew up listening to constantly. Of course Biggie & Jay-Z, but also different music like Morris Day and the Time, Prince, Ready for the World, Run DMC, Kurtis Blow, Sheila E. etc. Today, we feel the biggest dudes doing it are Jay-Z, Drake, Lil Wayne, Fabolous, Big Sean, Kanye, on the Rap side and on the Electro-Hop side Far East Movement, N.E.R.D., Akon, David Guetta, LMFAO. - (D.O.S.)

We've known the Bronx to breed some of the hardest records in Hip-Hop, but D.O.S. wants to introduce the BX to a new sound with their debut single “Sing All Night (Marscruiser Remix)”. The song features lyrics by D.O.S. alongside production from Paul "Marscruiser" Determan. Check out the the video below that was directed by Tara Maloney. Happy watching (FYI: Explicit Lyrical Content)!

eyeReview: Pink FRIDAY

The "Moment 4 Life" for the self-proclaimed Harajuku Barbie, Nicki Minaj, has arrived. The release of her debut album, Pink Friday has hit stores and is sure to cause mayhem in the music industry. It's no secret that almost everyone has mixed feelings about Nicki, whether its over her character, her kookiness, or her lyrical content. Truth is, the young lady is good at what she does, and since music is a form of expression I personally feel that she's entitled to present herself in whatever manner she feels appropriate for herself.

With all of that being said, I've listen to the album and will give her 4.5/5 eyes!
The lyrical content is there, the punchlines, the hooks, the versatility, the story, and the element of Rap and Hip-Hop. You can hear her growth and development now from the time of her mix-tapes days. If I had to pick one, my favorite track would have to be "Fly" featuring Rihanna. Other tracks that I can listen to over and over (not including those released as singles) are: "Here I Am", "Moment 4 Life" - I believe that life is a prize, but to live doesn’t mean you’re alive...And this very moment I’m king, this very moment I slay Goliath with a sling. I wish that I could have this moment for life...'cause in this moment I just feel so alive. - and "I'm the Best". Other featuring on the album include Natasha Bedingfield, Kanye West, Drake and Will.I.Am. Overall, it is a good album that I could listen to from start to finish. Kudos to Nicki, her hater, supporters, and everyone involved in this project.

In the words of Rihanna in "Fly": I came to win, to fight, to conquer to thrive. I came to win, to survive, to prosper, to rise...To FLY! Listen to "Fly" now, happy listening!

Trend Check: The New Puritan

Fashion: Ever-changing, recycled, reused, innovative, and expressed through new trends. What is it now? As TopShop has so eloquently put it, we'll call this one "The New Puritan". Styled with its razor sharp tailoring in black, white and red - alongside a decadent touch of stand-out pieces in velvet and leather - it's simply a good look!

Ladies, take your wardrobe to new heights by stepping away from the burgundy and forest green of the fall, and go back to the the basic black and white pallet! Add a bold pop of red alongside some metal pieces, heels or high boots - and bridge the gap between edginess and femininity and you're set!. Take a look at some of the pulls from the TopShop look book and shop for your favorites at www.TopShop.com!

eyeAsk: Who Encourages The Encouragers?

Between talking to friends, studying the issue and finding answers/solutions, I still feel compelled to hear, read and/or see what you think about this:

eyeAsk: Who encourages the encouragers? Who is supposed to lead the leaders? Who heals the healer? Who inspires the inspiring?

Some may say God, other may say each others - truth is, both are correct. There are so many answers that one can come up with, but I'm interested in hearing what you have to say. I'll answer in a comment as you should as well!

\ FUL-sum \ , adjective;

What does fulsome mean? Sickening or excessive behavior

Still don't get it? Let me break it down: When people get tired, what do they do? Go to sleep right? Well, some of us engage in fulsome activities. For instance, nagging their friends, or laughing excessively at not so funny jokes.

Return to Substance with 'Winnie'

What happened those good ole good black films? You know the ones I'm talking about, those of a classic/powerful nature. Where are the movies like Waiting to Exhale, The Best Man, Soul Food, Brown Sugar, Ali, Above the Rim, and Malcolm X, where are those movies that told our story in so many variations? Now I would be remiss if I didn't give credit where credit is due. Tyler Perry has done his part to carry the torch lit by the likes of Melvin Van Peebles, The Hughes Brothers, and John Singleton. And now, Darrell James Roodt is honoring Winnie Mandela.

It is up to us to inspire the creative minds amongst us, and support those who share their energy with us. This is where initiative comes to fruition, and legacy can be maintained. Similar to the story of one of the most recognizable and influential black women in history.
Based on the relationship of Winnie and Nelson Mandela; starring Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard, Winnie focuses on the untold story of Winnie Mandela. There is no release date has been set as of yet. Check out the trailer for the biographical film, 'Winnie':

Two Days eyeWon't Worry About

Two Days We Should Not Worry

We've all heard the saying "Life it too short", and when we think about it, it is. There's but only so much time in a day and if I could make a suggestion, it would be for us not to spend one minute of it worrying. Worry is something that robs us of our life. It is wasted time and energy. So here's to not worry, with an inspirational poem. Happy reading!

There are two days in every week, about which we should not worry,
two days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension.
One of these days is Yesterday with all its mistakes and cares,
its faults and blunders, its aches and pains.

Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control.
All the money in the world cannot bring back Yesterday.
We cannot undo a single act we performed;
we cannot erase a single word we said.
Yesterday is gone forever.

The other day we should not worry about is Tomorrow
with all its possible adversities, its burdens,
its large promise and its poor performance;
Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control.

Tomorrow's sun will rise,
either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds, but it will rise.
Until it does, we have no stake in Tomorrow,
for it is yet to be born.

This leaves only one day, Today.
Any person can fight the battle of just one day.
It is when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternities
Yesterday and Tomorrow that we break down.

It is not the experience of Today that drives a person mad,
it is the remorse or bitterness of something which happened Yesterday
and the dread of what Tomorrow may bring.
Let us, therefore, live but one day at a time.

eyeWatch: "What's My Name"

We all know her name, and though past events may have silenced her for a bit, but there's no doubt about it that Rihanna is back, and LOUD! Her new record is in stores now and she has been releasing videos left and right. One of my personal favorites off her fifth studio album is her collaboration with Drake, "What's My Name". The video is simple, fun, and reminded me of the Rihanna we met nearly 5 years ago. She was very likable and personable in showing the cute/laid-back side of a "relationship" and everything was easy, breezy and carefree. The styling in the video was great and the NYC Central Park vibe just added to everything else you needed in the video. The song was produced by StarGate and the video was directed by Philip Andelman. We have the brand new video for your enjoyment, so enjoy it! Happy watching.

eyeInspire: Change Your Focus

Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things” - 1 Thessalonians 4:12, NIV

When others look at your life, what do they see? Does your daily life win the respect of others? As believers, we are Christ’s representatives in the earth. We are called to a higher standard. The way we live our lives should bring glory to God the Father.

Notice this verse doesn’t say, “Go out of your way to do something major so that everyone will respect you.” It doesn’t say, “Win a gold medal or Pulitzer prize so that people will glorify your Father in heaven.” No, it says that your daily life should win the respect of others. That simply means always taking the high road and living a life of excellence. It means doing the right thing even when no one is looking. It means finding common ground in order to be a peacemaker. It means going out with an attitude of faith and thanksgiving.

Remember, you will become like whoever you spend the most time with.

If you are committed to spending time with God the Father everyday, you’ll develop His character. You’ll win the respect of outsiders and bring glory to your Father in heaven!

A prayer: Father God, I dedicate every area of my mind, will, and emotions to You today. Help me live my daily life as an example of You. Show me anything in my life that is displeasing to You. Let my daily life win the respect of others and let everything I do bring glory to You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

ToP THIS: Dealing With a Break-Up

Who loves relationship break-ups? Anyone? Yeah, I didn't think so. As much as we might not like them, the fact is that break-ups are a part of reality. Browsing the web, we found some awesome tips from sheknows.com for the women out there. We'll share them with you and, of course, add our elleELLEeye flare.

She says:
REDIRECT YOUR NEGATIVE ENERGY
Trade male bashing for some sweating -- we mean glistening, for us ladies...
We say:
Exercise not only stimulates your body, making it feel better, but you will soon see the benefits of your hard work. This will turn that messy break up into a new reason to go shopping :)

She says:
TAKE TIME FOR EXTREME SELF CARE
People tend to beat themselves up after a breakup, says Heidi Frei, life coach of Heidi Frei Coaching & Consulting...

We say:
Listen, what happened, happened! You can't change the past. All you can do is reflect on what happened, and work on how you will make things better the next time you're in a relationship (and trust me, there will be a "next time").

She says:
LISTEN TO YOURSELF
Frei notes one of the biggest problems women have after a breakup is not putting themselves first. To resolve this unsettled feeling, she recommends beginning a journal...
We say:
Not only can this journal give you a chance to get out all the feelings you might have had bottled up during the relationship (as She mentions later in the blurb), but when you write down your true feelings, you can keep them as a reminder of WHY the relationship is over. This will help you from slipping into the "sick cycle" of breaking up and making up.

She says:
TREAT YOURSELF LIKE A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR WOULD
If you can't treat yourself with love, how will someone else? Frei says it's important to "treat yourself like you want your ideal partner to treat you." ...
We say:
Enough said!

She says:
REDISCOVER YOURSELF
Relationships are often filled with many compromises. Create a vision board: cut out pictures and words from magazines that are meaningful to you in a relationship, (or print your own) and paste them to a poster board. This constant visual reminder will fill your mind with positive energy and remind you what can be achieved each day.
We say: Sometimes when you're "caught up" in a relationship, you forget exactly what it is you said you wouldn't stand for. "Write the vision and make it plain". We encourage you to always keep this board up as a reminder while you're in your next relationship.

She says
TAKE TIME TO GRIEVE AND START WITH A CLEAN SLATE
People heal at different paces. Allow yourself time to feel, cry. "Clear up reminders," says Frei, by purging things in your living space that remind you of the person. Don't get involved in a new relationship too quickly, which may transfer feelings from your old relationship to the new one...
We say:
And as you grieve (because break-ups are a loss) be mindful that there becomes a thin line between getting your feelings out and a pitty party. Feel! Let it all out and then get active. Even if you don't feel like it, getting active is the best way to avoid depression. Spending some time with GOOD friends and family also help. So please take time to grieve, but please be healthy as you do so.

She says:
ENRICH OTHERS THROUGH VOLUNTEERING
Volunteering is a great way to achieve self-actualization while helping others. You may not feel like volunteering. Regardless, Dr. Trent believes "actions dictate feelings, not the reverse. When we begin to take actions that are positive...that generates positive feelings. Not the opposite."...
We say:
Volunteer, help a friend, help a family member, just put yourself out there to spread love
.

Have any experience with some of these tips
or have any other tips you want to share?

eyeWatch: The Miss-Education of a Barbie

The greatest thing about being HUMAN, is being able to have an opinion, a voice. Jasmine Mans is a young lady no different from the rest of us, but she does have a way with words. When playing the game of "Truth or Dare", many of us opt for the easy way out and say "truth"; while some are brave enough to take on a challenge. I'll say that Miss Mans knocked out two birds with one poem on the topic of Nicki Minaj and her "Barbiefication". The Miss-Education of a Barbie" is a call to action not only for Nicki Minaj but, to all women in the entertainment industry. Jasmine says: I do not want Nicki Minaj to be the next Lauryn Hill or MC Lyte, I want her to rap as if women like Assata Shakur and Toni Morrison exist. The "Miss-Education of a Barbie" questions the message that Nicki Minaj is relaying to her listeners. If Nicki Minaj seeks to simply entertain audiences with shallow concepts then my poem can be written off as irrelevant to her and her fans alike. However, if she seeks to make a difference in musical history and in the lives of her fans around the world then my piece questions her methods of doing so.

Jasmine goes on to say, My poem targets Nicki Minaj because I am a long time fan and follower of her work. I recognize and applaud her lyrical abilities and the affect she has on women older and younger than myself. If we, as an audience, do not hold up a mirror to our artists, then who will? Her "Barbie" image is an objectification of womanhood. How can we expect our male rappers to pay homage and respect to women when the voice that is representing us is tainted with sexual innuendos and “child’s play?”. W.E.B. DuBois said all art is propaganda and should be used to uplift and challenge the African American community, and if art does not do such it is useless. Nicki Minaj is too powerful to be useless. I dare Nicki Minaj to be a PHENOMENAL WOMAN and not a phenomenal "Barbie." Take a look at Jasmine's performance of "The Miss-Education of a Barbie". Happy watching!

November is: American Diabetes Month

During November, I will do my very best to address different health observances. First on the list: American Diabetes

Facts:
-Diabetes is a common disorder from trouble in the endocrine system (your hormones like insulin, & other chemicals)
-Diabetes comes in two types:
1 & 2.
-Non insulin-dependent (Type II) is not only preventable, but in many cases curable.

Did you know?
-Over 20 million adults and children have diabetes in the U.S.
-According to the
American Diabetes Foundation, about 50 million more people have ‘prediabetes’ and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
-What’s worse is that the death rate of diabetes has risen over 40% since 1987 compared to other diseases that have declined.

But have no fear bizzybodies!

I’ve researched some ways you can prevent your sweet tooth from getting you into trouble. Also, remember for those of you who have family members with it (such as myself) make sure you check to see that it is not genetic!

1. Take care of your teeth! Did you know that chronic gum disease is often associated with diabetes? It can make it difficult for your body to control glucose levels.

2. Overweight? Physical activity is a proven remedy to avoid many health problems. Keep it consistent.

3. Chill out! Stress as well as certain foods leads to high blood pressure, which puts you at great risk for type 2 diabetes as well as other medical catastrophes.

4. Puff! Puff! Pass! …NOT. Need I have to say why smoking is bad for you? Okay then, moving on…

5. Substitute the licorice for spinach-well not exactly. However, since of many of you, like myself, may have a problem getting rid of dessert all together, replacing a fruit for a piece of pie can save a slice of your life.

These tips always seem like common sense right? Well then why the heck are so many people affected by it in the U.S.? That’s another story…Celebs like Bret Michaels & Patti Labelle provide ways to live healthier lives since they deal with diabetes as well.

Know any other tips? Drop a Buzz

Fashion Inspiration: Denise Huxtable

I think we all loved The Cosby Show. They gave African American viewers a positive sitcom to enjoy. I also know that secretly, we all wanted to somehow be a part of the Huxtable family. Although I loved all of the Huxtable clan, I have to say my all time favorite was Denise. I didn't just admire Denise for her cool Bohemian nature, but also for her style.

Denise Huxtable had to be the flyest older sister, with her over-sized blazers, harem pants, fedoras and Afrocentric pieces. She was simply fearless in her style choices - from her hair cuts to her head wraps. In the spirit of Denise, eyeInspire you to be original, be bold and be you. eyeWatch My Heath: Loco For Lokos?

According to theroot.com, Washington state attorney general Rob Mckenna is pushing for the FDA to ban the popular alcoholic beverage Four Loko nationwide. This push is the aftermath of a recent incident where 50 Central Washington University students became sick from drinking Four Loko's at a house party.

Four Loko is said to contain as much alcohol found in a six pack and as much caffeine as in five cups of coffee. I don't know about you guys but, this just sounds like a bad combination to me. Although, this is a cheap quick fix I truly believe its not worth risking your own health.
My Four Loko days are dead and gone, what about yours?
