eyeWatch: "Whip My Hair"

Willow Smith, no stranger to the entertainment industry, is declaring that she is a true artist. In more ways then one, Willow brightens up a room with her style, personality and wit in her first video for her single "Whip My Hair", directed by Ray Kay. The nine-year-old took things a step further from the usual painting the town red cliché. Instead, the Roc Nation signee whips her hair enough to add life to her bland classmates. The video features lot of color, wild hairdos, stellar, yet youthful fashion, and a cameo from her big brother, Jaden Smith.

eyePod: Power Remix

No one man should have all that POWER! The phrase may be true, but since Yeezy dropped the "Power Remix" with Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz, he's had people talking and the Internet buzzing. When the lyrics go hard, and the b-section on any track goes harder, it's easy to fall in love with a song.

Now everything I’m rhymin’ on cause a Ramadan
Been a don, prayin’ for the families lost in the storm
Bring our troops back from Iraq, keep our troops out of Iran
So the next couple bars, I’ma drop them in Islam
They say assalamu alaikum, say wa alaikum asalaam
That’s no Oscar Mayer bacon, you should run and tell your mom
Now the question is, how we gon’ stop the next Vietnam?
Keep Flex out of Korea, ’cause you know he drop bombs...

We're pretty sure most of you have heard it, but if not, Happy listening!

"I'm a Cash Cow...

...I'm bout to cash out". Words from Jay-Z over the Grammy family beat for Funk Flex on Hot 97. In this case I would assume that NIKE would be trying to profit off of that fact. The man has made millions off music, clothing, sneakers (remember the S dot Carters); all of which substantiates his hustlers ambition. But this ladies and gentlemen is a stretch. I can admit the sneakers are good money but 5 stacks for em - NOT I. I take issue with things like this: the theory that we as consumers will buy anything peddled to us by "icons", well I am here to stand up for all mankind and say that THIS MUST STOP. Sorry Jay, I ride with you through anything but this is not going down. How about we reconsider and take about $4900 off the tag and bring these back for Christmas. Fourth quarter will be yours homey.

If you're unaware of what's going on with these all black Nikes, Jay-Z has officially blasted Nike’s four day World Basketball Festival off with a bangin’ performance at Radio City Music Hall. He’s also stepping up for charity, with this special pack of five Jay-Z All Black Everything AF1s being auctioned right now on the ebay, with proceeds going to the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. There’s a shoe for each of the five nations competing in the WBF throw-down, with each shoe featuring a different premium upper. The only other person in the world to own a pair of these black beauties will be Jay-Z himself. BFF! If you've got the pockets you can place your bids here (SF).

J. Cole: The Warm Up, The Comp Up, The Rising Star

Imagine this: You're asked to write a verse on a song for Jay-Z's BluePrint III. Would you be nervous? Of course you would! Now imagine how J. Cole felt when he had to do it with Hov and Bey in attendance in the studio. I'm wiping sweat from my brow now and I wasn't there. Not only is that challenging, nerve-racking, and a privilege, but carrying the torch over at Roc Nation is no short task. Notably the most valuable artist, J. Cole has put together a nice track record of verses starting with a "Star is Born" on the BP 3.

Add to the list, his first single off his forthcoming untitled debut album, "Who Dat" (view video here). Besides those records, J. Cole has been on his grind with music for a while with his mixtape "The Warm Up" and "The Come Up"; which is how Jay heard him.

When asked about Jay-Z & Beyoncé in general, he says they are much more regular and down-to-earth than people imagine. I could imagine so, you know how life is much more is made about people than warranted in so many cases. The torch has been passed, and so far I've been impressed.

What are your thoughts on J. Cole?

eyeApplaud, A Recap of the Tony Awards

The 64th Annual Tony Awards is perhaps the most important night for Broadway, highlighting excellence in various categories of theatre. The event took place last Sunday at Radio City Music Hall with host, Sean Hayes. Other winners included Memphis for Best Musical, and John Logan's drama Red, for Best Play.

Fences is a play by August Wilson set in 1950-60's Pittsburgh, and follows the struggle of a former Negro League baseball player, Troy Maxson, who becomes a garbage collector. The first time this play was staged, it earned a Tony Award for Best Play as well as a Best Leading Actor award for James Earl Jones, Best Featured Actress for Mary Alice, Best Direction for Lloyd Richards and the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

I didn’t get to see this but I have read August Wilson’s plays, and it is no wonder how much recognition this man has received as a playwright. Fences is only one of ten plays that Wilson wrote to document a different decade of the African-American culture during the 20th century. Wilson is the only African-American playwright to have a Broadway theatre in his name. His work has accomplishment written all over it.

Fela is a play by Jim Lewis and Bill T. Jones that chronicles the life of Nigerian musician, Fela Juti, and how his sound influenced the nation. First-time theatre producers, Will & Jada Smith were attached to this project as well as Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

I saw this play, and let me tell you, 'Best Choreography' is an understatement! Every move is deeply African, and it is rich with fluid arm movement, and high jumps. During the production, the lead actor allows the audience to share in on the experience as well by teaching how to rotate your hips in a clockwise motion - a nice way to feel like you can dance too.

Queen Bee of the ROC

Word on the wave is that Hov has signed rapper Lil' Kim to Roc Nation - mixed emotions. On the one hand, it's Kim and she's a sure draw, even if off of personality alone; so in that case, it does seem like a good idea. I question whether the idea was contemplated thoroughly and before I get into the hoopla, I wanna know will she ever come out with an album. Shame is that in today's time people sign deals, and really become tax write-offs. By that I mean the music never gets put out. You get some shows and some cameos with the label chain, but never anything to hang your hat on. Need we really go through the list of people whom fall in this category? [Sidebar: Always have facts to back up your claim, I have mine.] But as I was saying, is this just a move to stir up the whole Lil' Kim vs. Nicki Minaj scenario before someone could capitalize off of Foxy Brown vs. Nicki? Hmmm...I wonder.

Next issue - Does Kim still have it? I'm not knocking her, but times have changed. With Emmo-rap taking over, the people want substance; not just entertainment. To think, the top 3 rappers at the moment have no showmanship (Ross, Jay-Z and Drake), but what do they have is LYRICS. Need I repeat, LYRICS!. Could this be a chance for Jay-Z to pick up his pen again? Let's not say he created Foxy - I'll argue that. Shout out to Inga.

As you can see, I'm torn on the subject; still and all congrats to Kim and Roc Nation, rock on! Let's just see if this project gets off the ground.

I would love to hear your thoughts. So leave a comment!

Songz Unplugged

Besides the fame, fortune & success, what do Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, and Jay-Z have in common? Their MTV Unplugged performances. New to that list is R&B sensation Trey Songz. I love the vibe of the MTV Unplugged specials and I think it's great that they are showing younger artists. I love the live bands and the strings showed out during Trey's set. I'll let you all see for yourselves. Happy watching!

JuNK effFOOD: 40/Fourty

Who's going out tonight? Well if you're in NYC, Atlantic City, Vegas, Tokyo or the Santo Domingo you may want to hit the 40/40 Club. But wait, something doesn't fit...According to the Associated Press, Jay-Z's business partners are suing Boston Red Sox player, David Ortiz. Why? Apparently, Ortiz has opened a club in the Santo Domingo by the name of Forty/Forty, in the hopes of using Jay's fame to get a crowd there.

Well Jay-Z & his people didn't like that idea too much, so Ortiz is being sued $5 million dollars for infringement.

Crazy right? COMMENT!

eyeWatch: "NY-Z"

Jay-Z and New York's Madison Square Garden go together like Wayne Newton and Las Vegas' the Stardust. So in honor of this partnership, Absolut vodka released a mini-documentary titled "NY-Z" that details the Brooklyn rapper's bond with the world's most famous arena. The 15-minute production, directed by Danny Clinch, landed online late Monday afternoon.

"New York, New York, is my foundation, it's the center of my growth, it's the muse for my art," Jay-Z says in the clip. "It's where I grew up. It's the thing that I have a lot of pride in."

The doc trails Jay-Z as he prepared for the release of his Blueprint 3 album and his September 11 benefit show at the Garden. The star-studded event boasted an array of guests, from old friends Mary J. Blige and Diddy to new Hov associates Kid Cudi and John Mayer. Happy Watching!

2010 Grammys Commentary + Winners

One of the biggest nights in music took place last night, the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, and let's just say that it was Ladies' Night. The biggest winners of the night were Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and the leader of the pact, Beyoncé - who made history by being the first to win six Grammys in one night. Check out the elleELLEeye commentary by ♥ t i f f a n y & DANiE, our favorite performance and the full list of the 2010 Grammy winners!

I was totally surprised that Lady Gaga opened the show with Elton John (and Elijah Kelley, commentator of the performance from the hit movie Hairspray), but I must say she put on a performance. The show continued with a comedic slot by Stephen Colbert who won a Grammy for Best Comedy Album.

"Song of the Year" went to the well deserved hard-working woman of show business, Beyoncé! I'll admit that I was a little disappointed that Bey didn't perform something else (considering I watch all of her performances and "If I Were A Boy" is old to me), but she delivered regardless. Did anyone peep Keri Hilson with her dead down while she was performing though? No comment...no Grammy =x

Green Day's performance was excellent!

Goldilocks herself, Taylor Swift, graced the stage and sang a total of three songs. The first song, she sang solo and remaining two songs she performed with country legend Stevie Nicks. She sounded pretty good, very mellow and chill, but I was looking forward to rocking out with her - which didn't happen...booo!

The "3D" Tribute to Michael Jackson was performed by Celine Dion, Usher, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Smokie Robinson.
I didn't have 3D glasses! If you watched this tribute with them, please let me know how it looked! There's no denying the talent these artist possess. I cant believe Michael's gone, but it was a little heart wrenching to hear his voice on the track as the artists sang with it. The tribute was dope.

I had 3D glasses, and it made no difference! If you think about it, it shouldn't have worked because it's really us (the people at home) watching someone else watch a 3D movie. I thought that the tribute was a bit creepy and that they could have done something else. I'm sure Michael would be flattered and taken back being honored, but if I was the King of Pop I would have wanted to see something else. I give that performance a thumbs down.

Prince and Paris Jackson once again showed their courage and spoke to the thousands of people in place of their late father Michael Jackson. What did you think about their short speeches?

I thought that Prince is very well-spoken and I appreciated Paris' little thank you. They are some brave kids.

Best Rap Collab: Rihanna and Jay-Z, "Run This Town". Their appearance with Juelz (Beyoncé's nephew) was the best part. The dapper little boy wore his tux with a fresh pair of Nike Dunks! When Rihanna picked him up and asked him if he had anything to say, he politely smiled and said "No, thanks". HOW CUTE! I AGREE!

Wyclef Jean stepped to the stage and reminded everyone of how strong the Haitian people are. I thought that was important because the news does portray some of the saddest images. That's a good take on it. I thought he looked a little too happy, but I see what you mean.

Pink's performance wasn't much different from that of the one she gave at the MTV VMAs. She did the whole gymnast/acrobatic thing, and though some were amazed, I was bored and confused at the part where she was dips in water and started spinning in the air. I would've been mad if I got wet!

The most random part of the night for me was when I missed the introduction to a performance. What performance? Jamie Foxx and T-Pain's "Blame It" with Doug E. Fresh. I thought it was so funny! Jamie is crazy.

Round of applause to Lil' Wayne, Eminem, and Drake! They graced the staged together and did a good job. Drake is growing as a performer, I actually enjoyed watching him.

The biggest awards of the night, Album of the Year, went to the American Sweetheart, Taylor Swift. She beat out Beyoncé, Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and the Dave Matthews Band. Honestly, I wanted the B.E.P. to win, but I think all of those nominated deserved it.

CLICK HERE FOR THE COMPLETE LIST OF WINNERS

And my favorite performance was...Black Eyed Peas (who won three awards) doing "Imma Be" and "I Gotta Feeling". Happy Watching!

eyeWatch: Onto the Next

2009 is out of the window and we're onto the next one! And so is Jay-Z and Swizz Beats with the video for the single "Onto the Next One". The video is hot, black and white, creative with great balls of fire (literally). I'm thinking that there may be a deeper message in the treatment of the video than what we are seeing. I'm not too sure if I agree with a couple of the images either; this being one of them: [click to enlarge]. If you haven't seen it, you can do so right now! Happy watching.

Isn't it almost sad how bad some celebrities feel the need to pull publicity stunt?! I don't know if it was her interntion, but this Lil' Mama incidents seems like it's being examed more than the O.J. Simpson case. Here's another video of the incident at the VMAs (which I must admit is interesting) of Beyoncé trying to hold Lil' Mama back from joining the stage.

I knew that Beyoncé looked puzzled when I was watching the VMAs. SMH this Lil' Mama is a pure wing for this! What do you think?
