BHM SPOTLiGHT: The Love Sharpener

What's one thing you need when you're taking a test? Sure, the answers may be nice, but if you're using a Scantron, or taking a math exam, a pencil would be ideal. Which leads me to John Lee Love, our Black History Month Spotlight Inventor. Love invented the pencil sharpener in 1897. Pretty cool huh?! Still don't think it's a big deal? Well, for all of those who use a sharpener to when applying makeup, you can thank Mr. Love for that. Johm Lee Love's pencil sharpener was patented on November 23, 1897 (U.S. Patent # 594,114).

Haute or Hate it: Katy Perry's Nails

Doing your nails used to be about colors, sparkle and shine. Decals and nail art are the traditional way to add a little fun to a fresh manicure. Katy Perry didn't get that memo; as she took it one step further and put pictures of her fiance, Russel Brand on all ten of her fingers (she even has a picture of him in his lingerie!). He wasn't able to attend the MTV VMAs with her, but she brought him along anyway. Personally eye love this, eye'm not sure if eye would do this on all ten fingers, but eye definitely love this style. Gabby S., Elle's New Bell

Elle Magazine is celebrating their 25th Anniversary, and with 25 being the theme and magic number of the October issue, they needed the hottest celebrities to join them. On the cover, Oscar nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe! It's great to see her back in action after the Oscars and Precious hype. The issue features Gabourey along with, Janelle Monae, Lauren Conrad, Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Mila Kunis, and a few others who were chosen for Elle's “The Quarterbacks: Our Favorite 25-Somethings”. My Life: As I Am

The Home Shopping Network has met its fastest seller and most popular to date, Mary J. Blige. Congrats are in order this past weekend after Mary debuted her fragrance My Life on HSN; selling 50,000 bottles. In all she grossed $2.7 million, $1 of which from each bottle sold was donated to her foundation - FFAWN (Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now).

This is big business. Doesn't it feel good to see our own do good? Especially when you've seemingly been along for the entire ride. We've seen her ups, we've seen her downs, we've seen her perseverance and redemption. Although the majority of her music was aimed at the upliftment of the female gender, I know art when I hear it and jewels when they're dropped. I am a Mary fan, and have no shame standing up for it. This woman has given us good music while letting us share - Her Life.

LeToya & Luster See New Faces

We see celebrities get endorsements all of the time; Kobe with Nike, Drake with Sprite, and Beyoncé with L'Oreal. The most popular endorsement for female R&B artists lye in the beauty department. Keyshia Cole, former face of Lusters hair care products; has been replaced by former Destiny's Child member LeToya Luckett. When it was time to re-sign the already multi-million dollar deal, Keyshia pulled rank and asked for more money.

Luster's thoughts must have been this: "On to the next one", and signed a check over to Letoya Luckett. Not a bad move. Sorry Keish. All's fair in hair and war.

Sweet & Sour Face

If everyone could afford to go to the spa every time they needed a facial, the beauty industry would be banking. Reality is, that's not the case and our Aveenos, Neutrogena, Noxzema, and Clean & Clears have to do. Those end up being a little pricey as well, especially if you're looking for a face wash or mask with an extra kick to it.

With the summer approaching, for sure the sweat and sun on our face isn't the best thing, but here's something that may help, a Grapes, Lemon and Egg Facial Cream. Where can you find one? Right in the comfort of your own home. This homemade recipe is best for oily skin. The lemon is used as a natural cleanser, the grapes will soften the skin, and egg whites will tighten it. You will need grapes, lemon, and egg whites.

Procedure: Squeeze the grapes extract into a bowl. Slice the lemon and extract the juice in the same bowl. Add egg white and mix them well. Apply into the face and leave it for 20 minutes. Don't be alarmed if you feel a little tingles in your skin, this will be because of the egg whites. Rinse face with warm water and wallah!

Garnier for a Gorgeous Face

Summer's almost here, that calls for your top of the line accessories for the season. But what will it be this season? Your skin! It's with you 24/7, but since you can't take it off or put a new one on, have to work with what you have. My skin ( as well as the skin of many others) tends to be dull and dry. I'm sure NO ONE likes this. So, what is it that I recommend for that glowing, glitch-free, oh so gorgeous skin you ask?

Well, I've been using some products from Garnier's skin line called Garnier Nutritioniste. First, I use Nutri-Pure Microbead Cream Scrub for a face wash. The microbeads gently remove any dead skin cells, allowing your skin's natural glow to emerge. This product doesn't clog your pores (meaning, it probably won't give you pimples). It's even infused with vitamins so that your skin gets that extra bit of healthiness into it!

I also use Garnier's Skin Renew Anti-Sun-Damage Moisturizer Lotion. This stuff is cool because it gives your skin a glow factor, as well as a feel factor. It has made my skin glow like it never has before. I actually want to touch my face! It's finally shiny, smooth, and sultry!

Graduating Nails

A Twist on the Ombre or Gradation Manicure
Have you seen the ombre manicure that was featured in InStyle Magazine? Well there are many ways that you can play with your nails, but this one seems like it's a keeper. I've grown an obsession with having my nails painted all of the time despite my retail job having them looked chewed up within 48 hours. So here's a new and cool way to do your nails with graduating colors!

The idea here is to custom blend varying shades of the same color, working across your hand from lightest to darkest. However this is a different route than the method suggested by InStyle. Rather than combine pure white polish into a dark lacquer, having to create 4 separate mixes, you can chose a light green and a dark green with similar color traits and blended them to create the mid-tone hues.

Products and Tools:
*Two polishes/Nail Lacquer of the same color family (the lightest & darkest)

*Disposable bowls to mix shades
*Toothpicks (for mixing)


*Clean nail polish brush.

Tips
*Have your nails prepped with base coat applied before beginning.
*Apply the polish as soon as it is mixed. Exposure to air will cause it to thicken quickly and dry shortly after.
*Mix the lightest color first and apply immediately before moving on.
*Clean your brush with remover between colors to avoid streaks from previously mixed polishes.
*Regarding my formulas below, I remove the brush from the bottle without wiping it against the sides and the amount that drips off equals one drop.

Note: Because this is a demo there are only mixed colors for the middle and ring fingers (the thumb is left out). You will want to mix three shades for a full manicure.

The best part is the topping!

Want smooth, shiny, made-for-touching hair? I say buy Suave Professionals shampoo and conditioner! I had to try it after I saw their commercial which shows professional stylists in awe over the product. After using it, I can say that I'm in awe too!! My hair is naturally curly and can look and feel very dull and dead. But after using these products, I feel like I have someone else's hair and this hair is great!

I used the Suave Professionals Sleek Shampoo which has silk amino acids and vitamin C to help frizz. It made my hair a lot more manageable than it usually is after a shampooing. I then used the Suave Professionals Vibrant Shine Conditioner, which also has silk amino acids as well as vitamin E for shine. My normally ruff and annoyingly frizzy hair is now soft, manageable and shiny. Honestly, I don't think I'll ever use any other product to wash my hair again. Try it out for yourself!
