February is a time for loved ones, celebrating culture, and even a new year. But more importantly, it is also a time to reflect on having a heart-literally. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death of women 20 and over, and more than 80 million adults are at risk for cardiovascular disease. On average, over 2000 Americans die everyday from various forms of this illness as well. This includes heart attack, cardiac arrest, and stroke.
During this month, the AHA is working hard to raise awareness with several initiatives including their 'Go Red For Women Campaign', a cause designed to help fight heart disease in females. The organization is also encouraging everyone to wear red on‘National Wear Red Day’, February 4th as a symbol of unity. Macy’s is also a proud supporter with their Wear Red Sale going from February 2-6 in order to raise funds and awareness for the campaign.
How much do you know about heart disease?
Warning Signs
○ Heart Attack: Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, pain or other discomfort in the chest or in other areas of the upper body, shortness of breath, breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or light-headedness.
○ Stroke: Numbness or weakness of the face, arm, leg, or one side of the body, severe headache, dizziness, and trouble with vision and comprehending.
○ Cardiac Arrest: Sudden loss of responsiveness and trouble breathing.
Prevention
○ No Smoking. Need I say more?
○ Keep your cholesterol under control: High numbers=high risk.
○ Keep yourself active: Exercise, yoga, or take a walk once a day.
○ Reduce your blood sugar: I love the sweets too but too much is never good for you.
○ Maintain your blood pressure: Stressing over the little things in life will only increase your chances of heart failure.
○ Watch your weight: You don’t have to be a size 2, but you must take care of you!
○ Spread the word: Knowledge is power. You just may save someone's life by telling them what they can do to protect their heart.
