When Billboards Go Too Far

When walking the streets of NYC's SOHO, there's a few things you can expect to see. Wacky outfits - sure, an anti-abortion billboard that reads

The most dangerous place for an African American is in the womb.

 
- maybe that's pushing it. But this is no analogy, the billboard is real and was put up by Life Always. The pro-life company is riling up New Yorkers, and African Americans worldwide.

The Life Always website even goes far enough to say "There is a battle being waged in the United States that has taken more lives than any foreign war or act of terrorism." If you ask me, this goes without saying that African Americans are terrorists and their weapon of mass destruction is the abortion clinic. It's such a shame what measures people will take to gain some attention. There are better ways to go about being an advocate for pro-life. But to deface an entire race to do so isn't right at all. Take a look at the ABC video below as they speak with NY'ers who were shocked by the billboard. Happy watching!

BHM SpotLight: The Cosby Show

Growing up, we all have our favorite television sitcom. Although this element of television is lacking in today's generation due to reality TV, I thank God for syndication and The Cosby Show. The Cosby Show has always been a favorite of mine. Why? Because it did a lot for television and the African-American culture. The Cosbys were an African-American upper-middle class family. With a mother who was a lawyer and a father who was a doctor, it gave African Americans hope that these titles were accessible. The show gave viewers something to take from each show through serious and comedic methods. The show touched on an array different topics, like dating, drinking, sex, college, home ownership, school and much more.

Here's a little known fact: Comedian Bill Cosby's 1984 sitcom, The Cosby Show, became the highest ranking sitcom for 5 years in a row. The program aired for eight years.

Aid a Friend: Spread the Message

Although National Black HIV/AIDs Awareness Day has passed, your consciousness shouldn’t. According to the CDC, African-Americans are the leading cause of all HIV/AIDs cases in the United States.

As of 2006, African-American men counted six times higher than white men for cases of new HIV infection, and African-American women counted nearly a whopping 15 times higher than white females.

Furthermore, from 2005-2008, the rate of HIV diagnoses rose from 68/100,000 to 74/100,000 making this number the largest increase of infection in a given ethnicity/race.

Seriously, what’s the buzz?

It is my belief that socioeconomic factors affect African-Americans harsher than other races, which contribute to high numbers. In other words: Poverty → poor housing → lack of healthcare → lack of education on prevention → not using protection or sharing of needles during drug use → infection spreads → fear (people will not seek help because they are afraid of others finding out) → death → HIGHER NUMBERS.

So what can we do? It’s simple: spread the message by educating yourself and others. 

Ways HIV is spread

*Sexual Intercourse

*Anal sex

*Oral Sex

*Injected drug use

*Blood transfusion

*Mother-to-child breast milk

Ways to prevent

*Abstinence: 100% proof against catching HIV/AIDs.

*Be in a monogamous relationship: Communicate with your partner and be honest about your sexual history. It can save your life and his/hers.

*Safe sex is unlike the rest: Any condom with spermicide for anal, vaginal or oral penetration. Lesbians may wish to use a dental dam, a thin latex square, for oral sex.

*If you work in healthcare: I’m pretty sure they drill this but you are at risk as well. Wearing medical latex or non-latex gloves when you come into contact with a patient’s urine, blood, or semen, or feces can protect you.

*Do not share needles: Ever!

*Stop with the stereotypes: HIV/AIDs doesn’t discriminate and neither should you.

*GET TESTED! If you are sexually active, you need to check your status, and more than once in a year.

BHM SPOTLiGHT: The Love Sharpener

What's one thing you need when you're taking a test? Sure, the answers may be nice, but if you're using a Scantron, or taking a math exam, a pencil would be ideal. Which leads me to John Lee Love, our Black History Month Spotlight Inventor. Love invented the pencil sharpener in 1897. Pretty cool huh?! Still don't think it's a big deal? Well, for all of those who use a sharpener to when applying makeup, you can thank Mr. Love for that. Johm Lee Love's pencil sharpener was patented on November 23, 1897 (U.S. Patent # 594,114).
