BHM SPOTLiGHT: Mary Ann Shadd Cary

Mary Ann Shadd Cary
October 9, 1823 – June 5, 1893

What an inspiring woman Mary Ann Shadd Cary is! She is a pioneer in Journalism, and co-founded "The Provincial Freeman" newspaper in 1853. The paper folded, but was revived in 1859. It promoted temperance, moral reform, civil rights & black self-help; while attacking the racial discrimination blacks faced within North America. In 1883, graduated as a lawyer from Howard University School of Law.

If that's not inspiring, I don't know what is.

For My Aphrodisiac Lovers

Here's a dish I found for all those BizzyBodies out there who don't mind indulging in a natural aphrodisiac courtesy of Ms. Paula Deen!

Note: Oysters are well received by many people to increase sexual desire. They contain zinc, which is known to increase testosterone in men, and libido in both genders. The smell of oysters is also similar to a female's pheromone, which aids in sexual arousal. Oysters also contain lots of protein and help to keep older men sexually active.

More to come!

Desiree Tizon, A Voice & A Dream

You never know how small the world is, until you actually meet the people living in it. Want to know how small my world is? I found out when I met singer, Desiree Tizon, who lives literally two flights up from me in Yonkers, NY. Desiree is currently a student at Florida International University (F.I.U.), studying Public Relations. But besides her education credentials, this girl can sing! Desiree sat down with elleELLEeye for an interview and we got to know her a little better.

LLi: What makes you love singing?

DT: When I listen to music, and I see how it influences me. I want to be that influence for other people. Especially for girls...you don't see that many female singers period. And if you do, they come and they leave. Every time I feel like I want to give up, "I'm like I can do it!"

LLi: What's missing from the music industry that you plan to bring?

DT: [What's missing is a] realness. A lot of people just want to force and push out hits, not really remembering why they were doing it in the first place. My main motive is to remember why others love my music. When people say that they like my music, a lot of them say, the lyrics meant a lot to them and that they could relate to it. That's why I want to keep doing it.

LLi: Do you ever feel like school interferes with you reaching dreams?

DT: All the time! I've always been a student who was involved in everything, so I was like "Oh, whatever, this is going to be nothing." It didn't happen that way. I had a meeting with [producers] Cool and Dre and they're like "This is hot; we want you to be a writer for us". [Unfortunately, I had to study for my sorority initiation on the day they wanted to meet.] I think I messed that [relationship] up, because I guess they saw it as, "Oh this girl isn't serious. If she was, she would be here right now."

LLi: Is there anyone you would like to work with...up and coming/underground artists?

DT: J. Cole. I love him so much. A lot of people say "Oh you just love him because he's a rapper." But, [what] I respect most is that he had the same problem I did. He was going to college, he didn't know how he was going to push his music - but he got his degree. Now, look at where he is. I look up to that a lot. I really like his music.

LLi: What do you live for?

DT: Music. Honestly, this has always been something I knew I was going to do. Sometimes I would get scared and say, maybe I should just go to school, get a job and be normal. But once this started taking off, I knew I could do this.

LLi: Who's the most inspirational person when it comes to your music career?

DT: My biggest inspiration is Alicia Keys. I respect her so much; her and Beyoncé. I started playing piano because of Alicia Keys. I could look at her in a concert, she can sit and play the piano the whole time, and everyone would love her. Everybody respects her. That's what I want.

LLi: With influences like Mary J. Blige and Alicia Keys, it’s easy for artists to lose their way by trying to sound like or be like someone else. How will you remain you?

DT: [I will remain me] by staying true to the music. A lot of people in the business [today] want everything to be a hit. But Mary J. Blige's "I'm going down", wasn’t a “hit”. A&Rs would listen to it and say - this is just another ballad. But, she stood true to what she was doing, and now we look [back] at it and say, "That was a classic." So I'll stay focused [on me].

LLi: You began writing songs at 7, what were you writing about at that age? How has your music progressed since then?

DT: I was writing about love! My dad was a freestyle DJ for Stevie B. and all of that high-pitched "Rock the Bells" type stuff. I would just write little stuff then. [I’ve progressed] format-wise. Even now, [with my version of "Killin' Em"] it was hard to write. Rappers, they have a flow for their 16 bars, but if a singer does the same melody to the bars, people will snore. So it's just learning to overcome that.

LLi: What's your recording process?

DT: Actually, a lot of the songs I write are on the spot. The first song I did, "I Wanna Go Back", is the only song I wrote ahead of time. It's just a thing of me going to the studio with my producer Michael, and I’ll write.

LLi: What inspires your ability to create?

DT: All of the songs I write are personal. The one that's coming out soon is called "Gonna Say Bye". All of my other songs have been [about love] and then something happened where things weren't so lovey anymore. So the next song is showing how I was there for everything, but [he didn't] appreciate me - so - I'm going to say bye. When I'm about to write, I think about how I feel. It's like writing a diary in your own format.

LLi: Being a music artist, what type of picture would you paint for the world to see?

DT: [I’ll paint a picture of somebody who can do a lot]. With all I do, people call me Wonder Woman. In order to be a good role model for people, you need to be smart and be able to hold yourself well. At the same time, you need to be able to be a boss and hold your own. I want the world to look at me like "She's a sweet girl, but don't mess with her!"

LLi: Do you have any stand out moments in your music career thus far?

DT: A lot of the things that I remember most have been singing with my high school choir [at Osceola High School]. I didn't go to a performing arts school; I went to a regular high school in a little city next to Orlando, named Kissimmee. That choir did everything for me. I learned so much through them, and more about myself; like learning to have patience and how to deal with other people. We sang in Virginia at “Music in the Parks”, in New York to sing at Carnegie Hall, the Bahamas, L.A., and all over Florida. Sometimes [it’s tiring, but] "I love this life".

LLi: How do you prepare for a performance?

DT: Before I perform I have to listen to music that makes me feel like I'm the sh*t. If I mess up the first time, they're going to remember me as the girl who messed up. I’ll listen to Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj [to help me] put on this demeanor like "I got this!" Once you have that, you're good.

LLi: There are no limits, what would be your dream performance?

DT: To go to any other country and have people know the words to my songs. I don't know how I would react to that. I was watching, the Beyoncé Experience, and she was in Tokyo. Those people don't know English, but they know all the words to her songs. That would be enough for me.

LLi: When can we expect new music from you? Do you have any upcoming projects?

DT: My new website, www.DesireeTizon.com features two new songs. I just did songs for Miami artists Kurtiz the Kid and Mercy. I'll be working with Ghost Rider and J. Nics (who’s opened up for Curren$y, Wiz Khalifa, and Big Sean).

ToP THIS: My Cheap Valentine

Valentine's Day. What's the BIG DEAL? I mean, it's a day where people waste their money on pink and red things. Teddy Bears and chocolate. Ballons and flowers. This might be your view on it all, but let's be real, it does feel nice to have someone that thinks about making you smile on that day.So the dilemma becomes, how can you have a heartfelt valentines day, without crying over empty pockets? I wont promise that these suggestions will be free, but they wont break the bank. Class is now in session, let Ms. King school you.

Anyone can write something sentimental in a card, but how about a "Top Ten reasons Why I Love You" list. This is something that you can do together or create on your own as a surprise. Be creative: use big paper and pictures, construction paper and markers. You'll have a great time going through pictures, reminiscing !

Go out for dessert. Nothing says I love you like food, so pick the sweetest food you can think of. Some of my personal favorite places are Tonnie's Minis, Coldstone,Crumbs Bake Shop and The Cheesecake Factory... YUM

Create a scavenger hunt! Hide a series of riddles and personal messages that will lead your loved one to the ultimate prize. You can start with a short personal message and then write a riddle such as "The next clue is under something that has four legs, two arms but will never walk". That clue should lead that special someone to look under the chair. Be fun and creative. The personal messages should be heartfelt and if you choose, leave a Hersheys Kiss at each clue for a little reward. But remember its a hunt, so hide those kisses well!

Create a drink together. Have fun mixing all kinds of flavors, fruits and syrups until you create the perfect concoction. When your'e done, give it a name. It will be something that will be special to both of you and you can include the drink during other occasions you both share.

Happy Valentines Day
Ms. King

eyeInspire: Be a Butterfly

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Try this: Think of yourself as a caterpillar. This isn’t the most appealing creature of the world, but focus on the transformation God puts it through. In Stage One, the egg is laid on a leaf. In Stage Two, the egg hatches and becomes a caterpillar. The caterpillar will eat the leaf it was born onto to help it grow. The more they eat, the more they expand and outgrown their outer skin; which occurs more than once.

The Third Stage is the pupa, also known as the chrysalis. Now, as most people know, caterpillars are short, stubby and have no wings at all. Within the chrysalis the old body parts of the caterpillar are undergoing a remarkable transformation, called ‘metamorphosis,’ to become the beautiful parts that make up the butterfly that will emerge. In Stage Four, the adult butterfly emerges.
Usually within a three or four-hour period, the butterfly will master flying.

The bible tells us not to conform to the patterns of the world. A pattern is an action that is repeated, thus becoming predictable. Instead of fitting in with the world, stand out for God and place yourself in his pupa. The world is unstable, and will change up on you without warning. God is the only thing that remains constant. He is what He says He is, and what He says He will do for us, will be done.

Behind everything we do in life, there’s a thought. In order to change, we must renew our way of thinking. Once you renew something, you don’t stop by just renewing it one time. You must renew it again and again, because there is always something that needs to be improved. Once our minds are renewed and we change the way we think, then we will learn what God’s will is for us.

Our willpower is only but so strong to fend off the things of the world. Our willpower will only produce short-term change. Give into God’s pleasing and perfect will. Allow Him to change the way you think, by placing His word in your mind. When we become transformed, God will give us new abilities to compensate our new forms. Don’t conform, be transformed!

eyePod: Downloads from Ayindigo & Nov

Is your eyePod lacking some up-to-date music in the Hip-Hop category? That's what we're here for. Today we have two tracks from some great unsigned talent.

The stars have arrived! And boy do they sound good! Ayindé + Indigo = Ayindigo have released their second single off of the Ayindigo project (release date TBA); "The Stars Arrived" featuring Fendi. If you know these artists, you know that their lyrical capability alone is crazy. So add a dope track for them to go off on and it's a done deal. The track is smooth and has an ill vibe to it.

Nov, who is new to our audience a rapper from Buffalo NY. Nov started his own label, Majeestyle Entertainment in 2005, and released his first project, The War in Music last year. I think I'm in love with his new single "Just Like You", as you will be too once you hear this joint. To get more information on Nov, visit his website: This Is Nov.

Get your free listen and download of both tracks below. Happy listening!

Have a Heart for February

February is a time for loved ones, celebrating culture, and even a new year. But more importantly, it is also a time to reflect on having a heart-literally. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death of women 20 and over, and more than 80 million adults are at risk for cardiovascular disease. On average, over 2000 Americans die everyday from various forms of this illness as well. This includes heart attack, cardiac arrest, and stroke.

During this month, the AHA is working hard to raise awareness with several initiatives including their 'Go Red For Women Campaign', a cause designed to help fight heart disease in females. The organization is also encouraging everyone to wear red on‘National Wear Red Day’, February 4th as a symbol of unity. Macy’s is also a proud supporter with their Wear Red Sale going from February 2-6 in order to raise funds and awareness for the campaign.

How much do you know about heart disease?

Warning Signs
○ Heart Attack: Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, pain or other discomfort in the chest or in other areas of the upper body, shortness of breath, breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or light-headedness.
○ Stroke: Numbness or weakness of the face, arm, leg, or one side of the body, severe headache, dizziness, and trouble with vision and comprehending.
○ Cardiac Arrest: Sudden loss of responsiveness and trouble breathing.

Prevention
No Smoking. Need I say more?
Keep your cholesterol under control: High numbers=high risk.
Keep yourself active: Exercise, yoga, or take a walk once a day.
Reduce your blood sugar: I love the sweets too but too much is never good for you.
Maintain your blood pressure: Stressing over the little things in life will only increase your chances of heart failure.
Watch your weight: You don’t have to be a size 2, but you must take care of you!
Spread the word: Knowledge is power. You just may save someone's life by telling them what they can do to protect their heart.

BHM: The Gift of Giving

It's an amazing thing to give. But it's an even better gesture to give on a day where you're meant to receive. You may know that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4th, 1968. But...

Did You Know: That his friend Maya Angelou's birthday is on April 4th?

After Dr. MLK Jr.'s death, Angelou stopped celebrating her birthday for many years, and sent flowers to King's widow every year until Mrs. King's death in 2006. Simply touching.
