eyeReview: Unknown

This weekend, the box office offered a few movies that caught my interest. Just Go With It, starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston was one of them, but once we got to the theater, we decided to go with the unknown. Unknown, is a film starring actor Liam Neeson and is based on the 2003 French novel published in English as Out of My Head, by Didier van Cauwelaert.

I really didn't know what to expect since I didn't read a synopsis of the film, or see the trailer; however, the movie drew me in with intuition and anxiety within the first 10 minutes. With the many puzzling moments of the film, it was easy for you to play detective and try to figure out only what you would at the end. The story line was interesting and of none I have seen before. Return to Substance with 'Winnie'

What happened those good ole good black films? You know the ones I'm talking about, those of a classic/powerful nature. Where are the movies like Waiting to Exhale, The Best Man, Soul Food, Brown Sugar, Ali, Above the Rim, and Malcolm X, where are those movies that told our story in so many variations? Now I would be remiss if I didn't give credit where credit is due. Tyler Perry has done his part to carry the torch lit by the likes of Melvin Van Peebles, The Hughes Brothers, and John Singleton. And now, Darrell James Roodt is honoring Winnie Mandela.


It is up to us to inspire the creative minds amongst us, and support those who share their energy with us. This is where initiative comes to fruition, and legacy can be maintained. Similar to the story of one of the most recognizable and influential black women in history.
Based on the relationship of Winnie and Nelson Mandela; starring Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard, Winnie focuses on the untold story of Winnie Mandela. There is no release date has been set as of yet. Check out the trailer for the biographical film, 'Winnie':

Essence Movie of the Year

Check out the entire cast of "For Colored Girls" splitting covers of the December 2010 Essence Magazine. The star studded women of the film are: Thandie Newton (orange), Kimberly Elise (silver), Phylicia Rashad (peach), Anika Noni Rose (yellow), Kerry Washington (blue), Loretta Devine (green), Janet Jackson (red), Tessa Thompson (purple) and Whoopi Goldberg (white) sat for the exclusive portrait for the magazine's 2010 Hot List issue. On the 2nd of the double covers are the men of the cast: Tyler Perry, Richard Lawson, Hill Harper, Omari Hardwick, Khalil Kain, and Michael Ealy. The women look phenomenal, and the men dapper and dandy. I cannot wait to see this film.

eyewatch: The Social Network

I’m convinced: social media is taking over the world.

Facebook.com has made it to the big screen with the biopic, “The Social Network,” which hit theaters today.

The movie tells the quite interesting story of how founder, Mark Zuckerberg and partners Chris Hughes, Dustin Moskovitz, and Eduardo Saverin created the digital phenomenon during their days in school back in 2004.

Though the creators have been head-budded with controversy, and Facebook has been banned in several countries, it is no question how this website has changed the lives of many people.

In its first year alone, Facebook acquired 1,000,000 followers, and as of July 2010, the social network has reached 500,000,000 active users with a net worth of over $30 billion.

When Women Need It Most

It seems that the brother Tyler Perry always delivers. We love to watch the movies, as well as criticize, but yet - WE STILL WATCH and crave more.This time around he has catered to our sisters A.K.A. "Colored Girls" as he calls them. The poster here features the inexplicably gorgeously sex Janet Jackson, the object of every mans affection, and wet dreams since the 80s. Formerly titled "Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf" (inspired by a 1975 play by Ntozake Shange), the film centers around seven women and their confessions of battles concerning love, abandonment and domestic violence.

Featuring an all-star cast including: Anika Noni Rose, Kerry Washington, Janet Jackson, Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad, Loretta Devine, Tessa Thompson, and Thandie Newton. The movie is due in theatres November 5th.

eyewatch: Your Life

Do you want to have your life featured in a film?

Well, you might receive your big break.

YouTube and producer Ridley Scott along with director Kevin Macdonald are teaming up to create what is being called the “first user-generated feature length documentary.”

The project, entitled “Life in a Day”, will tell future generations what it was like to be alive during a day in summer 2010. It will feature footage from YouTube users around the globe that is submitted by July 24th.

Chosen users will be credited as co-directors in the film, and twenty will be chosen to attend the premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

eyewatch: MoviEs 4 SummEr

It seems like all the studios jumped on the remake/sequel bandwagon this season with an exceptional catalog of films that have been resurfaced for our pleasure. Here’s a list of the summer line-up:

1)“Iron Man 2”-May 7th-Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, Scarlett Johansson
I just love a man made of steel…well not really. When his newfound fame as a hero goes to his head, a few villains are introduced to keep him busy, including Whiplash and Justin Hammer. He also receives help from his new partner, Rhodes/War Machine.

2) “Robin Hood”-May 14th-Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, William Hurt, Mark Strong, Danny Huston
He always did rob from the poor to give to the rich. Robin Longstride, Will Scarlett, Alan-a-Dale and Little John, return to England following the deaths of King Richard and Robert of Locksley. Robin promises Robert he will return his sword to his father in Nottingham. To do this, he impersonates Robert and in the midst, falls for Lady Marian. He then leads a gang against Robert’s ambusher, Godfrey, a member of the upper class, to keep him from taking over the kingdom.

3) “Shrek 4”-May 21st-Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, Julie Andrews
I guess we’re not over this ogre. In this installment, Shrek signs a contract with famed fairy tale character Rumpelstiltskin in order to regain his old ogre habits. When the deal goes terribly wrong, he experiences what life would be like if he never existed.

4) “Sex and the City 2”-May 28th-Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, Chris Noth
Umm…does this make you feel like your missing EVERYTHING in your wardrobe?! The women are back and this time they are headed to Abu Dhabi after Samantha uses her PR skills to give she and her friends the all-expense paid trip. This is a relief to Carrie, who wants to take some time away from her man Mr. Big, Miranda, who has to deal with a chauvinist boss, and Charlotte, who must deal with her 2-year old daughter. Shoes and handbags are an understatement for this foursome.

5) “Prince of Persia”-May 28th-Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, Alfred Molina
Wouldn’t it be cool if you could play the game the same time the movie plays on the big screen? An adventurous prince joins rival princess, Tamina to stop an irate ruler from destroying the world with a mystical dagger that unleashes a sandstorm.

6)“The Karate Kid”-June 11th-Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan, Taraji P. Henson

If you’re a 80s’ baby, you might have high expectations for this remake. Not a problem!In this film, a young boy and his mother move to China after her job transfers her to the new location. To combat his bullies, he seeks help from the maintenance man to prepare for a popular Kung-Fu tournament.

Other remakes/sequels coming up include "The A-Team", “Jonah Hex”, Toy Story 3”, the “Twighlight Saga: Eclipse”, “The Last Airbender”, and “Meet the Parents 3”. effFREDDY's Back

Wes Craven's horror film classic returns to theatres today...A Nightmare on Elm Street. As a child I seemed to enjoy EVERY single one of these movies; while my cousin was scared out of her mind, but as I grew older, I started to have the Freddy Krueger dreams.
Don't think I'm crazy, but I really had dreams that I would get sliced and everything lol. Luckily, I'm alive just to let you know that you don't have to worry about Freddy - because he is not real. I watched the preview and after seeing who Freddy is (Jackie Earle Haley), I'm not too scared. I think that the original Freddy (Robert Englund, who played Freddy from 1984 Nightmare on Elm Street - 2004 Freddy vs. Jason) was much scarier. Take a look at the trailer, happy watching!

On May 27th, say hello to New York, fashion, Cosmopolitans & four friends living it up! That's right, the sequel to the hit movie & show Sex & the City is back! Starring the four fabulous ladies, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, Sex and the City 2 is sure to be a hit in the theatres. We'll get to see how newlyweds Big and Carrie are doing, Charlotte's life as a mother of two, Samantha's sexier than ever personality, and Miranda's new and improved marriage. The Academy Award Goes to...

If you had any doubts about why March is Women's History Month, you must have missed the Oscars last night. Katherine Bigelow became the first female director to win Best Picture (the biggest award) for "The Hurt Locker", Mo'nique took home the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Precious" based on the novel Push by Sapphire, while my best friend (in my head) Sandra Bullock (who looked uh-maze-ing) won her first Oscar for her film "The Blind Side" as Actress in a Leading Role beating out rookie of the year Gabourey Sibide. Congratulations to all of winners of the night. I hope to be at the Oscars one day. Maybe I should start taking my acting dreams more serious lol. BROOKLYN'S effFiNEST

Friday is date night, and although it may seem a bit cliche, what better thing to do than to go out to the movies?! Today in theatres is the Brooklyn's Finest; directed by Antoine Fuqua (director of Training Day) and starring Wesley Snipes, Richard Gere, Don Cheadle and Ethan Hawke. Here's the plot: Three unconnected Brooklyn cops wind up at the same deadly location after enduring vastly different career paths. For more information on the movie click here. Married vs. Marriage

In today's world there isn't much pressure to be in relationship, but once you are in a committed one, there's loads of pressure to settle down and get married. I think that love is a beautiful thing, but since there is such an emphasis to get married, I think people lose site on making the actual marriage work.

So eyeAsk...
Do you think there is a difference between getting married and having a marriage? I'm not married or even close to it, but I just thought it was an interesting topic.

eyePreview: Fame

This movie is based upon the 1980 film which follows NYC talent attending the New York City High School for the Performing Arts, (Known today as Fiorello H. Laguardia H.S.) students get specialized training that often leads to success as actors, singers, etc. In 1936, New York City Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia founded the High School of Music & Art in order to provide a facility where the most gifted and talented public school students of New York City could pursue their talents in art or music, while also completing a full academic program of instruction. In 1948, the School of Performing Arts was created to provide training in performance skills to students who wished to prepare for professional careers in dance, music or drama.



The cast includes: Naturi Naughton (Denise), who played Lil' Kim in the movie Notorious, Debbie Allen (Principal Simms), who was a part of the original 1984 cast, Anna Maria Perez de Tagle (Joy), among many others! The film comes out in theatres on Septembre 25, 2009! Here is a trailer:

eyeCare: My Sister's Keeper

My Sister's Keeper is a film adaptation of the novel by Jodi Picoult starring Cameron Diaz and Alec Baldwin, and directed by Nick Cassavetes.

In the film, Anna Fitzgerald (played by Abagail Breslin) was brought into the world to be a genetic match and donor for her older sister, Kate (Sofia Vassilieva), who suffers from acute promyelocytic leukemia. Their lives have been intertwined because of their donor-recipient relationship from the minute Anna was born. Anna suffers, such as losing the chance to become a cheerleader or soccer player in order to be there when her sister needs her, but when she turns 13 Kate goes into renal failure, needing Anna's kidney, Anna sues her parents for medical emancipation and the rights to her own body. Attorney Campbell Alexander (Alec Baldwin) who has a dog named Judge, agrees to work for Anna pro bono.*

As soon as I saw the trailer for the film I knew that I wanted to be see it. I have recently been faced with the reality of having one of my best friends diagnosed with leukemia. I never thought that something like this could actually happen to someone close to me. It's really hard to deal with things like this sometimes, but everyday you have to remind yourself that everything happens for a reason, and that God has a plan for each and every one of us.

Though my friend isn't my blood relative, I can't help but consider her a part of my family. I know that God will pull her and her family through and soon things will be how they were when we would go to the bars, just hang out, or play dress-up together [yes, dress-up in college].


My bestie Dahknee [or Danie lol] brought to my attention this orange ribbon, which of course symbolizes leukemia awareness. Knowledge is one of the best things that you can get out of life, so make yourself aware about the disease. You may not personally have it, but you never know what God may throw at you; whether its through a family member or close friend. The photo below, "Hope, Love, Cure" is for leukemia awareness.
