A Passion for Service

Caring is sharing, I've heard said and I agree. In many cases we as a people are helped; individually and collectively. It may not be possible that we always have something to spare, but assistance is not always monetary. It can be good advice, or even an ear to listen. I wake up everyday grateful for my support system and the blessings I have received from up above. I encourage everyone not take one moment for granted, and when able, HELP ANOTHER.


I would like to pass on some information regarding opportunities to lend a hand in NYC:


- Now, through April 22nd you can donate lightly warn shoes to Soles4Souls who are collecting said items in an effort to fight the war on poverty, and help those in need of shoes. You can drop your donation off to Community Christian Church located at 145 W. 110th Street or visit their website for more locations.

- This coming Sunday, April 3rd non-profit Best Buddies helps students with intellectual disabilities. The second Annual Best Buddies NYC Friendship Walk will be held in Washington Square Park. Check in is at 930 A.M. and there is no registration fee.


Get out in the community and be of service. What better way to live, spread inspiration and love?!

Post #1000 | Stop the Violence

In the USA, we're taught a "Pledge of Allegiance" where we state that we're "One nation under God", yet we can't talk religion in public schools. "In God We Trust" is imprinted on our currency, but we don't trust God to keep our nation at peace. We send innocent men off to war; and applaud them if they go willingly, yet punish them if they refuse to fight. But "In God we trust" right? Is this the same "God" who says "Thou shall not kill."? Or am I missing something? We've been at war for so long, do we even know what why we're fighting anymore? Living in a nation that is so hypercritical and contradictory gets to me. Why are people killing? Why are people shooting? Why is there so much violence going on?

"I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent."

"I cannot teach you violence, as I do not myself believe in it. I can only teach you not to bow your heads before anyone even at the cost of your life."

"It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence."

"Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary."

Believe it or not, all of the statements above, were said by one man, Mahatma Gandhi. Very wise and powerful statements to say the least, and they definitely hit home in one way or another. The neighborhood where I grew up use to be a place of tranquility where kids were safe to be outside enjoying themselves; where a car driving recklessly had a sign that read "Student Driver", and was not a sign of a drive by shooter. I want those days back; where my friends were safe & shocking news wouldn't lead to bad thoughts or get well soon statements. Please, let us stop the violence. What is Leukemia?

Leukemia is the general term used to describe four different disease-types called:

Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML), and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).

The terms lymphocytic or lymphoblastic indicate that the cancerous change takes place in a type of marrow cell that forms lymphocytes. The terms myelogenous or myeloid indicate that the cell change takes place in a type of marrow cell that normally goes on to form red cells, some types of white cells, and platelets.

Our philanthropy is the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society. What can we do to help? Make a donation to help find a cure,organize a walk in your area, volunteer, spread awareness. We'll keep you up-to-date with the event we plan to hold.

"Walk for Lupus"

The 2010 Walk for Lupus will be taking place on June 5th, in Northern New Jersey to raise money for The Alliance for Lupus Research. A friend of elleELLEeye, Shanelle Gabriel, is heading a team called Creative Movement.

Building The Dream

This past Easter (April 4th) marked the 42nd anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. And with that, the National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. are commemorating the life and work of Dr. King by creating a memorial in our nation's capital. The Washington, DC, Martin Luther King, Jr., National Memorial will honor his life and contributions to the world through non violent social change.

The Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial will be the first on the National Mall to recognize a person of color and a man of peace, not a president or a veteran of war. In 1996 Congress authorized the Memorial Foundation to raise funds to establish a national memorial to honor the legacy of Dr. King on the National Mall. The memorial’s very existence signifies that we as a people believe Dr. King and his legacy deserve this esteemed placement in what can be considered America’s “Hall of Fame.” So, we bet there are some things you're wondering right? Here's a Q&A:

When will the Memorial be completed? The Ceremonial Groundbreaking occurred on November 13, 2006. The Dedication of the Memorial is tentatively scheduled for the Fall of 2011.

What can I do to help? Individuals as well as corporations can add their financial support to this effort. Contributions, large and small, are needed to attain our goal of $120 million. Spread the word to your friends, neighbors and acquaintances that their donations are urgently needed.Most major employers match employee donations, so if you donate to the Memorial Foundation your employer may double that amount.

Why build the Memorial now? Dr. King once reminded the nation of “the fierce urgency of now” while warning against “the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.” The time is now a historical perspective. Many young people have heard of Dr. King, but are unaware of the significance of his contributions to America and the world. The design has been established; the site is secured; the fundraising teams are already at work; and more than $106 million of the campaign goal has been raised. The time is now.

effFUNDRAISER for HAITI

Stars come together for Haiti. A benefit concert for the victims of the Haiti earthquake, hosted by George Clooney and featuring Jay-Z and Madonna is set to take place later. Other acts taking part in the two-hour Hope for Haiti telethon include Bono, The Edge and Rihanna, who pre-recorded their performances in London on Friday.

The concert will be shown on all major US TV channels, MTV in the UK and worldwide on YouTube from 0100 GMT. An estimated 1.5 million people have been left homeless by the earthquake. As many as 200,000 people have been left homeless by the 7.0-magnitude quake, according to some estimates.

Charity single
The benefit concert will take place in New York, Los Angeles, London and Haiti. More than 100 Hollywood and music stars are understood to have agreed to take part. Haitian-born rapper Wyclef Jean - who set up the charity foundation Yele Haiti - Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J Blige, Shakira and Sting will perform in New York.

Rihanna, meanwhile, will perform a cover version of Bob Marley's Redemption Song, which she has released to raise money for the people of Haiti. Film stars making appearances will include Brad Pitt, Ben Stiller, Clint Eastwood, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Julia Roberts, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Tom Hanks and Will Smith.

George Clooney, who organised the event, told MTV: "It's a big world out there, and we all have a lot of responsibility to look out for people who can't look out for themselves." "So what we can do is first and foremost, raise money. Period. That'sit ... "If I thought we could all pick up shovels and go in there and help without being in the way, I think a lot of people would do that."

The live programme can be seen online via YouTube, MySpace, Hulu, Fancast, AOL, MSN, Yahoo!, Bing.com, BET.com, MTV.com, CNN.com, VH1.com and Rhapsody. The show will also be repeated in the UK at 0900 GMT on Saturday morning, on both MTV and its sister channel Viva. Meanwhile, Rod Stewart, Leona Lewis, JLS and Michael Buble have signed up to provide vocals for a Haiti charity single, organised by Simon Cowell.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Today is the day we honor an activist and prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr.'s main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States, and he has become a human rights icon. In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means.

If he were here, I'm sure he would have been proud to see what progress has been made in our nation. Although racism isn't obsolete, we have a black President of the United States of America. When Dr. King had a dream, I'd like to say that this accomplishment surpassed that.

A 7.3 earthquake hit Haiti yesterday (January 12, 2010). Haiti needs earthquake recovery help immediately. A large amount of victims are expected from this disaster. Many buildings have crumbled and many people are missing.

Reach out to help the people of Haiti recover from this tragic earthquake. Time is of the essence to help relief groups save lives.

Donate to the Red Cross
The Washington Post notes that people may text: HAITI to 90999 and a $10 donation will be made to the Red Cross for earthquake emergency response. This amount will be charged to your bill for cell phone.

Donate to Local or Goodwill
When a disaster strikes nearby countries, the Salvation Army and Goodwill will send items from America to those areas in need. So donate to your local stores. Items donated to Salvation Army and Goodwill help people in crisis to start a new life.

Although monetary donations are needed to help save Haiti, that's not the only way you can help. Get in contact with these organizations to see how you can volunteer your time as well; because theoretically, time is money, and I'm sure they would appreciate it! Get involved!

eyeCare: WORLD AIDS DAY

It's the first of the month, and while some enjoy the luxury of getting paid or joy from expecting some other sort of check in the mail, there is a percentage of the world that is dying. Dying from unawareness and dying to spread awareness of the HIV/AIDS virus. Today, and every other December 1st is World AIDS Day.

I won't lecture you on the virus, but what I will do is encourage everyone to get tested. It may not sound like the easiest thing to do, but go when you're ready or find a friend or confident to go with you. Remember testing is confidential, it's better to be safe than sorry.

World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat that diabetes now poses.

The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in the public spotlight. This year sees the first of a five-year campaign that will address the growing need for diabetes education and prevention programmes.

CODE BLUE PSA

While many of us take for granted that uncomfortable bed that we complain about, the food or lack of in our refrigerators, the luxury of having over 500 channels and "nothing to watch on TV", there are millions of TEENS who would give anything just to have a roof over their head. Skye Townsend has been actively sending out "tweets" on Twitter spreading this public service announcement, "CODE BLUE".
